ABOUT THE ROLE
The GILLIG Engineering Internship Opportunity is a paid summer internship for rising students and/or new professionals that are interested in automotive technology and/or full-time career opportunities at GILLIG. We’ve designed these openings to offer entry-individuals into a growing field and booming industry.

JOB SUMMARY
The Engineering Intern position will work alongside Engineers, Designs and Technicians responsible for engineering design and support. Duties involve engineering assistance, problem resolution and other engineering duties in support of the design and manufacturing of specific parts. This person will have direct influence at the part level to optimize the piece parts. This position reports to the Engineering Supervisor but may also receive direction/guidance from senior engineers.
We have intern positions in the following areas:
Current Product Engineering (CPE):
Current Product Engineering covers both Customer Engineering & Sustaining Engineering teams:
The Customer Engineering team delivers robust, fleet-specific designs required for each of our customers’ operational needs. Customer Engineering has technical responsibility from the initial customer bid through vehicle delivery. These efforts focus primarily on:
- Encompassing bid team support
- Translation of requested features and functionality into parts
- Design & release of components/systems
- Validation support & implementation into production
The Sustaining Engineering team pursues enhancements and optimizations for our current product platforms that spans across virtually all stages of the vehicle lifecycle. These efforts focus primarily on:
- Developing broad applications of new customer option content
- Cost and performance improvements
- Design & release of components/systems
- Driving resolution of technical Supply Chain, Production, Field, and Aftermarket needs
New Product Engineering (NPE):
The New Product Engineering (NPE) Team is focused on developing the next generation GILLIG products and major upgrades to our existing product line. These efforts focus primarily on:
- Zero-Emission powertrains
- Major quality improvements
- Major cost reduction, maintainability and product stability improvements
Validation Engineering:
The Validation Engineering Team develops test procedures from requirements with guidance for engineers as required that will set the direction for test execution on systems and vehicles on road and in the laboratory. These efforts focus primarily on:
- Instrumenting vehicles in preparation for testing
- Support testing efforts in the laboratory or the field
- Collecting and analyzing data using serial data, eDAQ and direct measurements
- Review of findings with Senior Engineers and Engineering leadership
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The Engineer Intern role works closely with the engineering team, receiving guidance on design work and troubleshooting. Job responsibilities include the following:
- Perform basic engineering calculations for appropriate sizing of components
- CAD design of bus components and sub-system assembly and drawing release of designed components
- Understand engineering documentation and spec sheets of purchased components
- Fundamentals of troubleshooting and logical approaches to basic troubleshooting
- Given clear definition and requirements, deliver a properly engineered solution
- Develop an understanding of GILLIG organizational structure and processes
- Perform other assigned duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS

- Current enrollment to obtain a BSEE, BSME, or equivalent Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field is required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products
- Previous design experience is preferred.
- Knowledge and/or experience with automotive industry, use, maintenance or design is preferred.
- Experience and knowledge of engineering CAD and support software is preferred.
- Knowledge and/or experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Serviceability (DFS), industry standards or regulations (SAE, ASME, FMVSS, NFPA, etc.) is a plus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Prolonged periods of sitting/standing at a desk and working on a computer
- Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk and occasionally kneel or squat
- The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- No Travel Required
- Standard start time: 6:30AM (negotiable)
- Must be able to navigate manufacturing environment, comfortable around heavy machinery, tools, etc.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, (i.e. safety glasses, bump caps, hearing protection, etc.)
Salary Range: $36.34/PH
