Job purpose
The Environmental Health and Safety Manager will develop the plant culture to achieve an accident-free environment. Serves as the local expert in health and safety disciplines and ensures regulatory compliance to applicable laws and standards. Supports plant leadership to drive continuous improvement toward world-class safety.
Duties and responsibilities
- Promote a Zero Injury Safety Culture: Provide leadership and coaching to grow the site leadership team, plant operations, plant safety committee, and EHS direct reports, create a workplace free of recognized hazards, promote safe work behaviors, and foster a lean safety culture that keeps the safety of employees a business value.
- Ensures the company complies with all federal, state and local regulations required in a manufacturing environment, including applicable OSHA (29 CFR) and EPA (40 CFR) as well as completing and submitting appropriate federal, state, and local regulatory filings.
- Maintain, review and analyze company safety and environmental practices by conducting audits, and determines any recommendations based on audits performed to upper management.
- Develops and maintains safety and environmental programs as appropriate.
- Determines and provides regulatory advice / recommendations to company management relating to environmental, health and safety.
- Provide daily guidance and direction in EHS programs for managers, supervisors and Team Members to ensure a common and effective approach.
- Maintains an understanding of applicable federal, state and local regulations including a working knowledge of regulatory requirements and required programs such as but not limited to: lockout tagout, hazard communication, hearing conservation, emergency action/evacuation, fire prevention/protection, ergonomics, machine guarding/labeling, hazardous materials, SDS database, fall protection/prevention, confined spaces, combustible dust, blood borne pathogens, respiratory protection and first aid training.
- Maintains accurate and complete records of training, inspections, audits, and required regulatory documentation.
- Educates, motivates and trains line supervision and Team Members in good housekeeping practices, safe work procedures, PPE, etc.
- Develops and implements effective plant programs for the identification, prevention and control of occupational injuries and illnesses.
- Create strong focus on behavioral safety and Team Member engagement
- Establish goals, objectives, metrics and scorecards to assure the EHS function is effective.
- Ensures all mandatory training is completed annually and during new hire orientation.
- Conducts accident investigations and handles all worker’s compensation activity
· Proactively addresses and corrects all unsafe behaviors and conditions.
Qualifications
- Qualifications include:
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health & safety, or environmental engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred; 5 years progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing environment. Forging manufacturing experience is a plus.
- Energetic leader with proven ability to lead change initiatives; demonstrated interpersonal skills to effectively interact with individuals of all disciplines and levels within and across the organization; ability to think strategically and critically analyze details from multiple sources; capable of consistently taking the initiative to get things accomplished; able to apply appropriate situational leadership techniques to adapt to the current situation; competent in evaluating people's strengths and improvement areas and mentoring/coaching for improvement.
- Practical experience in OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and EPA 40 CFR
- Working knowledge of basic software applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization in all formats, including verbal, written & presentations
- Experience supervising, leading, and developing EHS professionals
