BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, maintain the building and facilities of a child care center in a clean, sanitary and sage condition.
DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS: The Custodian-Child Development Center class is distinguished from the lower class of Custodian because employees in this class are assigned as a one- person child development center and perform all custodial services required by the site.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements).
E = Essential Functions
- Sweep, dust, vacuum or mop floors, steps, ramps, blacktop and walkways. E
- Spot clean and shampoo carpeting. E
- Clean sinks, toilets, and other sanitary facilities. E
- Wash windows, woodwork, walls, tables, ledges, light bowls, blinds and other center equipment. E
- Replace light bulbs as needed. E
- Set out and stack cots. E
- Sweep or hose walks and outside play areas. E
- Clean hood of stove. E
- Collect, carry out and dispose of trash and garbage and clean containers. E
- Maintain the center’s custodial and equipment storage areas. E
- Make minor repairs; report needed maintenance and repair. E
- Check fire extinguishers. E
- Turn off lights, lock doors and set alarms. E
- Report any information concerning vandalism, theft and fire. E
- Make preliminary supply orders. E
- Keep required records. E
- Perform emergency cleaning when necessary. E
- Assist in preparing sites for meetings. E
- May perform site surveillance work at a differential rate of pay as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to: Graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed.
Custodial experience preferred.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Personality and character suitable to work in schools.
Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, Tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor environment; driving a vehicle to conduct work; seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; exposure to chemicals related to cleaning; working around machinery with moving parts.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned tools and equipment; seeing to perform custodial work; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects; standing for extended periods of time; performing heavy physical labor.
