The International Festival of Arts and Ideas Fellowship Program offers qualified New Haven public school sophomores and juniors a unique,fully-fundedopportunity to learn about the artsand arts administration. The Fellowship Program is a semester-long college-level course designed to develop students skills in communication and critical thinking by immersing them in all aspects of theFestival: performances, lectures, community engagement, production, and management. Working and teaching alongside a Gateway Community College Instructor, the Fellowship Co-Teacher will lead and execute the program.

Through weekly seminars, a broad range of arts-related activities, and the attendance of diverse arts events, we aim to equip the Fellows with the skills to become the next generation of artists, thinkers, and audience members. Fellows will learn to think and speak critically about the themes of theFestivalsvarious concerts, classes, talks, and performances, and ultimately lead their own event during theFestivalas their capstone project.

At the end of the Fellowship Program, Fellows will also have a thorough understanding of theFestivalsrole as an arts nonprofitfrom anoperationsperspective.The program equips its Fellows with marketableprofessionalexperience, skills, and connections that will prove useful for future internships or employment opportunities. We see the Fellowship as a potential beginning of a longer-term engagement with theFestival. Our hope is that the Fellows will be interested in returning to theFestivalin the following year in some capacityasvolunteers, interns, or employees.

Accredited through Gateway Community College, the Fellowship Program offersstudents4college credits and an academic transcript upon successful completion of the program.


The Gateway Community College Adjunct Professor will serve as a key liaison between Gateway Community College (GCC) and the Arts & Ideas Fellowship Program. This role involves communicating essential updates, needs, and announcements to the Fellowship Cohort and the Community Impact Manager. The Adjunct Professor will co-teach the 2025 Fellowship Cohort alongside the Arts & Ideas Fellowship Instructor. This position offers the opportunity to guide high school students in an enriching, arts-based program while supporting their academic and creative development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Co-Teaching: Collaborate with the Arts & Ideas Fellowship Instructor to co-teach the High School Fellowship Program on Wednesdays from 4:30 PM 7:30 PM, running from January 2025 through June 2025.
  • Curriculum Development: Assist in the creation and adaptation of curriculum, daily agendas, and assignments for the Fellowship cohort.
  • Student Support: Provide academic guidance and mentorship to students, particularly as they develop their Capstone Projects.
  • Excursions & Events: Co-chaperone Fellowship excursions and festival events, ensuring student safety, engagement, and learning.
  • Orientation & Graduation: Assist in planning and attending Fellowship orientation sessions (January 8, 2025) and the graduation ceremony (June 2025).
  • Evaluation & Feedback: Develop and administer surveys to assess student progress at the beginning, middle, and end of the program.
  • Program Coordination: Serve as a point of contact between Arts & Ideas and the Fellowship Cohort, ensuring effective communication and program logistics.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by high school students.
  • Teaching experience, especially in an academic or arts-based setting, is highly preferred.
  • A strong commitment to fostering community engagement and supporting students' personal and academic growth.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other basic technology tools.
  • A Masters Degree in a relevant field (e.g., Arts Administration, Education, Fine Arts, etc.) is required.

Background Check:As this is a role that deals directly with children, the successful applicant will be subject to a criminal background check.

Schedule and Time Commitment:

  • Planning and Preparation: Late December 2024 to January 24, 2025.
  • Orientation: January 8, 2025.
  • Course Instruction: January 29 May 14, 2025 (Wednesdays from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM).
  • Festival Immersion: June 14 June 28, 2025 (dates and schedule may vary based on festival activities).

Compensation:

  • Pre-Course Planning: $25/hour for planning and preparation before the first day of class.
  • Course Instruction (15 weeks): The course is worth 3 academic credits, with compensation of approximately $6,000 for the entire semester. GCC will issue payment at a rate of $2,000 per credit.
  • Festival Immersion (June 2025): A separate contract will be issued for 50 hours at a rate of $38/hour for the duration of the festival immersion (June 14 June 28).
