Originally founded in 1930, I-House remains a vibrant community affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley. Each academic year, I-House is home to over 600 UC Berkeley undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students from more than 80 countries. I-House is also home to the Robertson Resident Life and Intercultural Development Office (RIO), a center for programming and training to cultivate leadership, understanding, and cross-cultural collaboration.

I-House provides diverse hospitality services for residents and the Berkeley community. At our historic building's entrance, edmonds' caf offers coffee, grab-and-go items, beer, and wine in a welcoming setting. The Dining Hall serves daily meals featuring globally inspired cuisines for residents and the community. The events team hosts functions in a range of meeting spaces and offers catering for on-site and off-site events, including collaborations with the university's colleges and departments.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive marketing and communications strategies to enhance the visibility, engagement, and mission of I-House. This role requires a dynamic individual who can collaborate across departments to effectively communicate the organization's value to prospective students, residents, alumni, donors, university faculty and staff, and the broader community.

The Director works in collaboration with various departments, including the Executive Director, Finance, Admissions, Alumni Relations and Philanthropy, edmonds' caf, Events and Catering, Dining Services, and the Robertson Resident Life and Intercultural Development Office (RIO). They are responsible for developing strategy, managing the production of communications and digital assets, and ensuring consistency in quality, messaging, and branding across the organization. In addition, the Director serves as the principal relationship manager for third-party vendors and consultants providing marketing and communications services and is the primary liaison with UC Berkeley communications offices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIESStrategic Leadership : Develop and oversee the execution of an annual marketing plan and associated budget aligned with organizational goals.In collaboration with the Executive Director, CFO, and I-House departments, develop and oversee execution of the marketing and branding for the organization's centennial fundraising campaign.Lead branding efforts to ensure consistency across all I-House departments and communication channels.Analyze market trends and adapt strategies to improve outreach.Content Development and Campaign Management : Oversee the creation of impactful content for digital, print, and media platforms.Manage multi-channel marketing campaigns, including email, social media, events, and advertising.Collaborate with internal teams to highlight programming, events, and initiatives.Develop content strategies that resonate with diverse, multicultural audiences.Team and Vendor Management : Lead and mentor the I-House communications and marketing staff embedded in our departments, fostering professional growth.Manage relationships with external vendors and agencies to ensure quality and timely delivery of services.Digital Transformation : Innovate digital engagement to improve donor retention and community outreach.Oversee the development and maintenance of the organization's website and CRM systems.Community Engagement : Engage multicultural audiences and expand organizational visibility through tailored outreach strategies.Collaborate with RIO and resident leaders to foster understanding of and commitment to the I-House mission among residents.Develop strategies for donor and alumni engagement in partnership with the fundraising team.Work with hospitality team on dining, caf, catering, and event marketing strategies.Budget Oversight : Prepare and manage the marketing budget, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.Support in the development and tracking of departmental budgets.Monitor expenditures and optimize resource allocation.KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCIES

Strategic Marketing Expertise :

Proven ability to develop and implement multi-channel marketing strategies that align with organizational goals and drive audience engagement.Nonprofit Marketing Acumen :

Strong understanding of marketing for nonprofit organizations, including donor engagement, fundraising campaigns, event promotion, and hospitality.Digital Marketing & Analytics :

Expertise in leveraging digital tools and platforms, such as Google Analytics, SEO / SEM, email marketing platforms, social media management tools, and CRM systems, to optimize campaign performance.Brand Management :

Experience developing and maintaining brand guidelines to ensure consistency and integrity in communications and marketing collateral across I-House departments.Storytelling & Content Creation :

Ability to craft compelling narratives and create engaging content tailored to diverse audiences and channels, including written, visual, and video formats.Diversity & Inclusion :

Commitment to promoting diverse perspectives and fostering an inclusive approach in marketing efforts to reach multicultural and global audiences.Collaboration & Leadership :

Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage external vendors, and collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders.Project Management Skills :

Strong organizational skills with experience managing multiple projects, timelines, and budgets in a fast-paced environment.Data-Driven Decision Making :

Skilled in analyzing marketing data to measure ROI, track KPIs, and inform strategic decisions.Crisis Communication :

Experience handling sensitive or crisis communications with professionalism and poise to protect and enhance the organization's reputation.QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.At least 7-10 years of progressive experience in marketing, with leadership responsibilities.Proven success in developing and executing marketing strategies.Strong knowledge of digital marketing, data analytics, and CRM systems.Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.Experience in a nonprofit or higher education setting is highly desirable.Experience preparing marketing materials for a comprehensive fundraising campaign is highly desirable.COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation : $105,000 - $120,000 annual salary rangeI-House also offers a robust benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage with 100% employer-covered premiums (dependent on plan selection),Life insurance, short- and long-term disability, access to a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), commuter benefits, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).A 403(b) plan with a 5% matching and a 5% non-elective contribution. This organization also offers a 457(b)-retirement plan option.Paid vacation totaling 18 days of accrual in the first year (with accrual increasing after 5 years), paid sick time, 14 paid holidays, and generous family leave and accommodations.
