Job Description:
As a Support Specialist for Special Education, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Assisting teachers with instructional materials and classroom displays
- Maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment
- Helping with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
- Providing orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
- Meeting the individual needs of students, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning, interpreting instructions, and assisting with physical needs and personal care
- Managing mild behavior of assigned students, including incidents that are more extreme or dangerous behaviors that pose a significant risk to self or others
- Recognizing differences in students' special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapting methods and interaction accordingly
- Working with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
- Supervising and assisting assigned students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty
Required Skills and Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess:
- 48 earned college credits, associate's degree preferred
- Or high school diploma if formal academic assessment is passed as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Two years of experience working with children
