The Fiscal Affairs Department (FAD) of the International Monetary Fund is seeking to hire a Research Officer (RO) for the Immediate Office. Under the supervision of the Assistant to the Director, the RO will be expected to work independently. She / he should use her / his quantitative skills and contribute to conduct, collect, compile, and perform relevant research and analysis in support of the work of the FAD Director.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Lead the production of academic research, surveillance outputs, and presentations including preparing the narrative, relevant data outputs, analytical tables, charts and documentation of the work for the director’s external events, blogs, talks, internal brainstorming and the semi-annual WEMD (World Economic and Market Developments) presentation to the Managing Director and Executive Board.
Conduct research surveillance of global, regional and country level trends including fiscal and monetary developments; debt and financial vulnerabilities, general macroeconomic analyses; and comparisons to historical events and / or across countries to provide an in-depth account and background of global developments to the Director.
Build, maintain, and expand the databases required for the work of the Director, following best data management practices. Review the data accuracy and verify internal consistency in an independent manner. Collaborate with FAD divisions and other departments in providing tables for the press briefs of the Director. Automation of table production and data outputs to the extent possible is essential.
Participate with other staff on analytical projects in support of the director’s work agenda. Take initiative proposing analytical framework to address key issues, gather and analyze the data as needed. Support modeling simulations, and econometric tests.
Facilitate knowledge sharing and coordinate activities within the RA / RO community in FAD. Provide guidance and mentoring to other RO / RAs as needed.
Liaise and support with analytical work and data, as needed, other divisions, departments and across institution.
Support outreach activities of the FAD Director and FAD front office, including data requests from the press and others. Provide high quality visualization for data, charts, and presentations, and work closely with the Communication Department, as needed.
Qualifications :
The successful candidate is expected to have the following skills and / or background :
An advanced university degree, or equivalent, in economics, finance, statistics or computer science, or a related field; or a university degree, or equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of six years of relevant professional experience. Previous experience as research assistant or analyst is highly desirable.
Good understanding of statistics and econometrics. Strong understanding of Excel and creation of charts in Excel. Familiarity with PowerPoint or Keynote. Proven working knowledge of Stata. Knowledge of other statistical or programming software (Eviews, Matlab, etc.) would be highly desirable. Prior knowledge of empirical techniques would be advantageous.
Experience with financial data and databases (such as Bloomberg), and a strong background in FAD databases and Fund economic data management software are highly desirable.
A sound understanding and diverse knowledge of advanced economic concepts.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines under pressure.
Proven ability to work across divisions, and experience working with colleagues of all ranks are highly desirable.
Proven self-starter willing to take personal initiative to put forward intriguing ideas and new research outputs.
This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent's performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
