Position Overview

International Corporation, a leading North American truck manufacturer with great products, a strong market position and best-in-class distribution network, has an exciting new opportunity for a High Voltage Battery System Component Assembly Engineer to join our join our Energy Storage Value Creation team. This is currently a hybrid position working 3 days in office and 2 days work from home a week at Rochester Hills, MI; Elmendorf, near San Antonio, TX; or Lisle, IL. (International reserves the right to update the current hybrid working status at any time).

 

The HV Battery System Component Assembly Engineer in this role will be responsible for overseeing the assembly of localized components and ensuring their seamless integration into the overall RESS assembly process. This position requires a keen understanding of part function, form, variants, and how to best optimize them for assembly and manufacturability.  The work will include collaboration with our suppliers on externally sourced battery solutions in addition to co-development work with our TRATON partners. Candidate must be willing and able to travel to support supplier development and integration activities.

Responsibilities

  • Component Assembly Oversight: Lead the assembly process for localized components used in battery modules and packs, ensuring adherence to design specifications, manufacturing constraints, and quality standards
  • Integration into RESS Assembly: Collaborate closely with the broader assembly team to integrate localized components effectively into the overall RESS assembly process, ensuring compatibility and functionality
  • Management of prototype flow
  • Part Quantities, variants, and alternatives: Manage part quantities, variants, and replacement strategies to support assembly flexibility, production ramp-up, and continuity of supply
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all assembly processes meet regulatory requirements and standards, including safety protocols and quality assurance measures specific to battery components
  • Quality Assurance: Develop and implement robust quality control procedures for component assembly, including inspection and testing protocols to maintain high standards of product quality
  • Process Optimization: Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains in component assembly, working closely with manufacturing teams to implement solutions
  • Supplier Collaboration & Readiness: Willingness to travel to supplier locations to oversee component production, resolve technical issues, and support supplier development and qualification activities
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation of component assembly processes, test results, corrective actions, and compliance records, ensuring traceability and alignment with quality management systems
  • Problem Solving: Investigate and resolve assembly-related issues using structured problem-solving techniques, ensuring timely resolution and minimal impact on project timelines
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams including design engineering, supply chain, quality assurance, and operations to achieve project objectives and milestones effectively
  • Organize and participate in component supplier DFMEA reviews
  • Work with validation teams to develop, execute, and assess component DVP&Rs
  • Provide start-up and on-going support to the North American RESS Assembly Plant

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 5 years of experience in product design/development

OR

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • At least 3 years of experience in product design/development

OR

  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current International Motors employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Desired Skills

  • 4 year Mechanical or relevant Engineering degree from an accredited college or university
  • Proven experience in mechanical design and assembly, with a focus on battery components or similar technologies within automotive, energy storage, or related industries
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, assembly techniques, and materials used in battery component assembly
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and standards applicable to battery components, including safety protocols, quality standards, and environmental regulations (e.g., OSHA, ANSI, ISO)
  • Experience in developing and implementing quality control procedures for component assembly, including inspection and testing protocols
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Catia, Siemens NX) for design and documentation
  • Familiar with design-for-serviceability concepts
  • Excellent analytical skills with a structured approach to problem-solving and process optimization.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across diverse teams and organizational levels
  • Experience working on components for HV lithium-ion batteries preferred
  • Experience with automated assembly systems in component assembly processes
  • DFSS green or black-belt certification preferred
  • Ability and flexibility to travel, including internationally, for up to 2 weeks a few times per year
  • Ability and flexibility to travel internationally for approximately one to two months, preferred
