Summary

To deliver comprehensive social work services to students, parents and the school. Under the direction of the School Leader, the primary role of the School Social Worker is to identify and assist students to overcome barriers that interfere with learning through the use of assessment, counseling, consultation, coordination of school and community resources, and program development. The School Social Worker utilizes knowledge of human behavior, social, cultural and community influences to help create a positive learning climate. The School Social Worker functions as a mental health professional on the multi-disciplinary team and provides case management services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Meet those standards of performance for his/her social work assignment as developed by International School of Louisiana.
  • Promote regular school attendance of students through on-going attendance monitoring at school, counseling students and their parents, and consulting with school personnel regarding the effectiveness of the school’s attendance incentive plan.
  • Provide direct counseling and/or consultation to students and families when students are experiencing school adjustment and/or attendance difficulties.
  • Make home visits as indicated or required.
  • Facilitate communications between the home and the school by involving families in the educational process of their children and help school personnel understand family situations and problems that may affect school performance.
  • Interpret school social work services to parents, teachers, principals and other school personnel and the community.
  • Serve as liaison between the school and community agencies, through reciprocal referral arrangements, collaboration on cases and assist families in obtaining and utilizing local resources.
  • Function as a member of a multidisciplinary pupil appraisal team in the evaluation of certain children.
  • Participate the multi-disciplinary team and provides case management services.
  • Plan, conduct or assist with in-service training programs for school personnel.
  • Provide parent workshops and/or training sessions in areas of communication, child management and family/school related concerns.
  • Attend IEP, SAT, and RTI meetings.
  • Address discipline problems and work collaboratively with school leader for serious cases.
  • Work in partnership with the Behavior Interventionist.
  • Provide psycho-social screenings to determine the social, emotional, behavioral needs of students for the purpose of pinpointing the source of school or parental concerns; provides effective intervention strategies which will lead the student to be more successful in school.
  • Collect and record information to share with appropriate personnel as a component of case study.
  • Coordinate in-school counseling and intervention services with appropriate mental health provider.
  • Serve on multidisciplinary team to address needs of students with or without disabilities to assure implementation of appropriate services.
  • Provide crisis intervention services.
  • Make appropriate referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and specialist when necessary.
  • Promote an understanding and appreciation for diverse populations.
  • Provide appropriate information to staff related to the school counseling program.
  • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
  • Conduct a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain compliance with all school policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Qualifications, Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher (Masters Degree preferred).
  • Valid Licensed Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Experience working in a school setting
  • MSW and BCSW preferred with experience in services to children preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) part of the work day;

  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements;
  • Normal setting for this job is an office/school setting.
