Job Description:
STEEL SHIPFITTERS
Skills/Qualifications: LEARNER
Must have a set of basic tools needed for trade (crescent wrench, striker, tape or ruler)
Must have knowledge of tools and some mechanical ability
Must be able to read a tape or ruler
Learning the terminology used for tools and vessels
Have all required PPE and understand all safety regulations
Have a position attitude and good attendance.
CLASS C
Same as learner plus the following; Ability to layout simple plate dimensions
Have some hand tools and knowledge for their use
Ability to fit simple steel jobs with supervision
Able to finish burn in flat position
Learn how to wash burn
Learn how to use heating torch
Help meet production schedules through team work
CLASS B
Same as Class C plus the following;
Learn how to pick-up and layout simple plate dimensions
Learn how to template, cut out and fit simple shapes
Have own tools and proficient in their use
Able to read simple drawings
Learn how to finish burn in all positions
Can Tack weld proficiently
CLASS A
Same as Class B plus the following
Hand bevel plate
Use track torch
Fit steel safely and accurately in all positions
Lay out, template and form basic shapes
Ability to hand burn neatly
Able to read simple blue prints
CLASS AA
Same as Class A in an expedited manner plus the following:
Able to pick-up and lay out all plates
Able to use plasma torch
Ability to make templates
Can work from simple sketches and blue prints
Able to work with minimal supervision
CLASS AAA
Meet all requirements for Class AA in an expedited manner, plus the following;
Knowledge of structural blue prints
Able to assist with break and rolls
Able to make roll sets
General knowledge of other crafts and how to coordinate with them
Ability to supervise a small crew
Able to work independently with only the job specifications as a guide
Master Craftsman:
Meet all of the requirements for Class AAA plus the following:
Minimum 10 years experience
Able to roll and break plate
Able to build structure from blueprints and job specification without assistance
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE No standard has been identified.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations before customers, clients, or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Skills required for AA and AAA Class, plus ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measures, whole numbers, common fractions and decimals in U.S. and metric conversions.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
ABS and USCG certified.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, couch, or crawl in the performance of essential duties and responsibilities of this job. The employee may be required to climb or balance above a height of 5 feet in the performance of essential duties and responsibilities of this job. The employee should test in the acceptable range for vision, hearing, and respiratory functions.
Specific physical requirements include the following: Ability to lift 50-75 pounds on a consistent daily basis; Ability to bend, stoop, climb aboard ships;
Ability to work in small, tight, confined spaces of no more than 14 inches by 14 inches;
Ability to work above ground at heights of a minimum 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery;
Ability to withstand extreme heat in outside climate or confined spaces;
Physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment as prescribed under OSHA standards;
Ability to stand for a minimum of 2 hours while conducting regular work duties; Ability to respond to voice commands and audible alarms.
Must be able to wear a respirator in the performance of their duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
