Job Description – Engineer
I. Description of Position
- Fundamentals of this position consist of operating a locomotive within the facility enabling the movement of railcars from one track to another in conjunction with a conductor as instructed to facilitate the loading/unloading of railcars and the arrival and departure of trains.
II. Qualifications Standards
- Individual must have the ability to maintain a focus on safety, while operating heavy equipment. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to pass all background checks and drug/alcohol screening.
III. Organizational Relationships
- Engineers will report directly to yardmaster/facility manager/regional manager and /or general manager.
IV. Job Requirements / Responsibilities
- The well-being and safety of all employees
- Must be able to communicate (read, speak and write) in English to meet FRA requirements.
- Participation in daily safety and job briefings
- Being on time for work
- Perform radio tests before any work begins
- Inspect all equipment at the start of the shift
- Wear proper PPE while at work
- Use proper radio communication while working
- Put oil & water in engines, replacing brake shoes, etc.
- Properly tie down engines
- Properly untie engines
- Correctly turn on and shut down engines
- MU-ing engines correctly
- Get on and off equipment
- Perform brake and load tests on engines
- Operate engines on different grades
- Operate road power (UP, BNSF, CSXT, etc.)
- Knowledge of using the train brake vs. independent brake
- Know if a switch is lined for or against a track
- Proper use of horn signals and bells
- Dump air on engines & train in case of emergency
- Complete daily/weekly/ monthly To Do’s
- Maintain a clean facility
- Submit to and pass a drug/alcohol screening, background check and e-rail safe.
- Other tasks as assigned
