What are the responsibilities and job description for the Simulation Software Engineer II position at inversionspace?
Turning Space into a Transportation Layer for Earth
Who We Are:
Eras of humanity can often be defined by a dominate transportation mode - horse drawn chariots, ocean going boats, or aircraft. These were spurred by a small group of people rigorously focused on building technology to achieve faster access to more of the world. We seek to usher in a new era of humanity defined by universal access to the whole globe free of borders and the presence of a routine way from space to Earth. To do this, we are building highly maneuverable re-entry vehicles that can loiter in orbit before precision landing back on Earth.
About the Role
As a Full Stack Software Engineer at Inversion, you'll focus on building the front-end and supporting backend infrastructure for operator tools, simulation dashboards, telemetry viewers, and mission setup interfaces. You'll also contribute to internal systems for managing and navigating test results, enabling teams to debug and iterate rapidly on complex vehicle behavior.
What You'll Do
- Design and implement web-based dashboards for mission control, simulation playback, and test queue management
- Build intuitive UIs to visualize telemetry, explore mission timelines, and navigate large datasets
- Develop internal tools to search, filter, and compare simulation/test results across versions and configurations
- Implement and maintain backend APIs and data models to support both real-time and batch result workflows
- Integrate with logging and data storage systems (SQL, file-based, or time-series databases)
- Contribute to metadata tagging, result versioning, and test documentation pipelines
- Collaborate with simulation, autonomy, and DevOps teams to create operator workflows that scale
- Ensure interfaces support engineers and operators working under time pressure during integration or mission rehearsal
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- Typically, 3–6 years of experience as a full stack or front-end leaning software engineer
- Proficiency in modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Vue) and front-end UI principles
- Backend development experience using Python (Flask, FastAPI) or Node.js
- Familiarity with REST APIs, WebSocket communication, and data visualization libraries (e.g., Plotly, D3)
- Comfortable in Linux-based environments with Git-based workflows
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with time-series data, telemetry formats, or custom simulation result schemas
- Experience building APIs that support structured data filtering, result replay, and dashboard interactivity
- Knowledge of database systems (SQL, Postgres, InfluxDB, NoSQL) for storing and querying structured results
- Familiarity with real-time data pipelines, distributed logging systems, or result caching strategies
- Background in simulation environments where human-in-the-loop tools are critical for validation
- Prior work on internal tools or dashboards for testing, integration, or flight operations
