1. CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CLASS
Journey level work of a technical nature enforcing compliance with National, State, and Local fire prevention codes. Under general direction of the Fire Marshal conducts fire and life safety inspections in accordance with applicable laws. Assists in the delivery of fire and life safety programs and coordinates fire safety and prevention initiatives. May conduct fire-related investigations.
2. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
· Performs annual life safety inspections, e.g., schedule, notice, inspect, code research, process inspection paperwork.
· Schedule and conduct follow-up inspections (site visits, concerns).
· Advise owner or owner’s representative of code research status.
· Perform new construction inspections, e.g., obtain required paperwork, code research, inspection form.
· Participate in pre-construction meetings.
· Advise Contractor of violations, e.g., communicate, educate.
· Process inspection paperwork.
· Respond to inspection Inquires, e.g., code and code interpretation.
· Perform priority inspections (gated community, property owner, firefighter, resident).
· Initiate Fire Watch, if needed, verify Fire Watch activities.
· Conduct pre-construction inspection activities, e.g., receive test order requests (hydrant flow, pump performance test), schedule tests, perform tests, document results, inform parties.
· Perform Disaster Preparedness and participate in post storm activities, e.g., damage, assessment, etc.
· Conduct non- inspection field operations, e.g., pick-up and delivery of blueprints, crowd control as needed for; fire scenes, incidents, respond to fire alarm activation.
· Assist in post-incident investigations, e.g., contact Red Cross, take photos, make notifications, etc.
· Conduct building orientation/tours, e.g., train/educate suppression personnel.
· Participate in ICS Activities, e.g., pre/post disaster.
· Perform administrative duties associated with job (special projects, reports, data entry, assist in development SOGS/SOPS, assist in budget preparation etc.
· Participate in enforcement/legal proceedings, e.g., tickets, hearings, court/criminal proceedings.
· Respond to Citizen Inquiries.
· Remain apprised of all District policies and guidelines.
Performs other duties assigned as related to the job class.

3. REQUIREMENTS
a. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
i. REQUIRED
· High School Diploma or Equivalent.
· Florida State Fire Inspector I certification.
· Must hold a valid Driver License that allows for operation of District vehicles.
· Must be insurable by District’s automobile insurance carrier.
ii. PREFERRED
· Associate degree
· Florida State Certified Investigator
· Florida State Certified Inspector 2
· Instructor I
b. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
· Knowledge of the laws, regulations and fire prevention codes that govern Fire inspection.
· General knowledge of the building construction field.
· Knowledge of administrative processes including computers, standard operating procedures, policies, and procedures.
· Skill in using various computer software programs to create correspondence, memoranda, spread sheets and produce reports.
· Intermediate mathematical/algebraic skill level.
· Excellent communication skills both in oral and writing.
· Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
c. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· This individual is subject to potential hazards in performing inspections.
· The work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to perform essential functions.
· The work may require: the performance of tasks in extreme heat, cold, and confined areas; exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals; performance of tasks at elevated levels including, but not limited to climbing ladders/scaffold and traversing stairs; exposure to prolonged noise levels; and performance of tasks outdoors under varying conditions.
· Specific requirements include, but are not limited to, the use of personal protection equipment including hearing protection, eye protection, foot protection, hand protection, and head protection.
· Frequent pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
d. ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
· The individual primarily works in the field conducting inspections.
· The individual is often exposed to hazardous and high-risk environmental conditions including but not limited to heat, heights, uneven terrain, inclement weather, and other hazards found at construction sites.
