The Chemistry, Biology, and Physics Departments seek applicants for a Senior Laboratory Technician and Chemical Hygiene Officer (SLT/CHO). Responsibilities of the SLT/CHO include management of the overall organization and routine operation of the science instructional laboratories as well as the chemical inventory, waste, and safety training for the School of Arts & Science on the New Rochelle Campus.
SLT responsibilities include:
- Coordinate and manage the inventory of chemicals and laboratory supplies for all science departments.
- Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of materials (chemicals, specialty equipment, general lab supplies) for assigned experiments in all introductory (100-level) biology, chemistry, and physics courses
- Preparation of materials for organic/analytical chemistry labs
- Oversee and train staff laboratory technicians and student workers.
- Oversee the maintenance and use of laboratory instruments.
CHO responsibilities include:
- Work with the faculty and administration to maintain and update a Chemical Hygiene Plan in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), EPA, and other relevant regulations.
- Conduct regular safety training for faculty, staff, and students working with and around hazardous chemicals in the workplace; maintain centralized records documenting training.
- Work in collaboration with appropriate staff to:
- maintain an accurate and updated chemical inventory for the University
- maintain a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) database
- monitor safe use and disposal of chemicals
- organize periodic hazardous waste disposal
- investigate and complete reports for any incidents involving chemicals or exposure in science departments on the Iona New Rochelle campus
- Conduct periodic laboratory inspections to ensure compliance
- Perform required safety audits
- Coordinate safety resources, storage and disposal plans, and training across units and campuses to ensure consistency
- Review and apply relevant regulations concerning chemical safety, stay aware of changes to such regulations, and act as a resource for the University on these regulations and chemical safety in general
