Ionia County Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, part-time
Pay Grade 6: $19.05 - $23.31
A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a woman with successful breastfeeding experience. The goal of a Peer Counselor is to educate a pregnant or lactating mother on the aspects of normal breastfeeding, offer encouragement, identify concerns and barriers to breastfeeding, and help them to anticipate problems breastfeeding. In addition, the Peer Counselor provides anticipatory guidance to reduce the occurrence of problems and problem-solving situations when they occur. Peer Counselors see mothers in person or at their home and respond to phone or electronic requests for consultations 24/7. Peer Counselors also identify and help mothers to effectively utilize community resources.
Brief Listing of Duties/Responsibilities:
- Completes all training requirements for the position.
- Assists in marketing the Breastfeeding Program and in data collection for Quality Assurance purposes.
- Teaches breastfeeding classes and facilitates a support group for mothers and infants.
- Provides close contact and follow-up to mothers during the early postnatal period.
- Provides information and promotes breastfeeding to WIC clients.
- Identifies the need for referrals to the Breastfeeding Coordinator or Breastfeeding Specialist
- Keeps accurate documentation of contacts with mothers.
- Respects each client by keeping their information confidential.
- Attends staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma.
Possess effective communication skills and the ability to accept responsibility for carrying out required tasks
Must have breastfed at least one baby for at least 6 months
Must be familiar with WIC; current or previous WIC client is preferred
Must have full-time access to an insured automobile (mileage reimbursement is provided)
Valid driver’s license
Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
