BIOMARKER SENIOR SCIENTIST
Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated and outstanding individual to join our Biomarker group as a Biomarker Senior Scientist. The Biomarker group develops, supports, and implements the biomarker strategy to support the wholly owned Ionis pipeline. This is a new position that is an individual contributor on the team. This individual will be working with cross-functional teams to devise, support, and provide scientific input on the development and implementation of the Biomarker strategy for individual programs. They will be responsible for the biomarker research plans for assigned programs and will support experimental design, data interpretation, and overall scientific needs. They will lead a cross-functional team for each project, interfacing with research, clinical development, and the biomarker bioanalytical lead. Additionally, they will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments in the laboratory to support biomarker research activities. The candidate must have scientific experience, strong critical thinking and project leadership skills.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for working with Research and Clinical Development leads, and within the Biomarker group, to devise and execute the biomarker strategy with excellence for assigned programs
- Support and provide scientific input on biomarker activities (preclinical studies, clinical data interpretation, regulatory strategy)
- Independently lead/provide oversight of biomarker research activities:
- Biomarker biology/dynamics
- Support biomarker bioanalytical activities
- Lead biomarker meetings and provide regular updates to key stakeholders
- Communicate in an effective and timely manner with team members and senior management regarding project status, timelines, milestones, key events, and changes to the biomarker strategy
- Design and conduct experiments to identify biomarkers, evaluate feasibility of new methods, and support the understanding of biomarker dynamics/biology (30-50% of role)
- Represent Biomarkers in research meetings and be readily available to advise on biomarker related updates and questions
Qualifications:
- PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field with postdoc or 2 years of industry experience
- Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Experience devising, designing, and executing scientific experiments and projects
- Expected experience includes running protein and RNA assays, including ELISAs, Western blots, and dPCR/qRT-PCR
- The following experience would be beneficial but is not essential:
- Experience with assay development
- Running assays such as targeted RNA-seq or mass spectrometry
- Ability to multi-task and manage several projects in parallel.
- Work collaboratively and productively in fast-paced cross-functional teams.
- Excellent communicator who is comfortable leading and presenting in cross-functional meetings and maintaining open and effective lines of dialogue, addressing problems and collaborating constructively with team members
- Must be organized, adaptive, and detail oriented, with the ability to multitask, and manage multiple programs in parallel with competing priorities
- Proven ability of being productive and successful in an intense work environment
- Candidate must be in San Diego or willing to relocate
- Travel minimal 0-10%
