Description Summary
The Adult Education and Literacy Assistant Director will provide leadership for the Adult Education and Literacy program at various locations in the Iowa Central service area. Responsible for student instruction, intake procedures, orientations, testing and tracking student progress, data management, curriculum development, student recruiting, retention and other administrative duties as assigned. The assistant director must be flexible with the work schedule as program needs are identified. This position is contingent on grant funding.
Examples of Duties
Constant (67-100%)
- Supervise and provide leadership to Adult Education instructors in various locations across the Iowa Central service region.
- Assist in collecting and entering data for all state and federal requirements.
- Communicate with potential and current students about upcoming courses.
- Assist in developing appropriate research-based curriculum that is aligned to the College and Career Readiness.
- Develop managed enrollment courses for Adult Education and Literacy classes.
- Follow Iowa Workforce Development guidance and procedures for state and local reporting.
- Guide students in choosing attainable educational goals for the program year and follow up on goal outcomes.
- Collect student agreements and follow FERPA guidelines.
- Work cooperatively with other college personnel in the overall development of Adult Education and Literacy services.
- Work cooperatively with the Student Resources Center to follow testing procedures.
- Maintain security for all testing materials.
- Instruct Adult Education and Literacy classes (may include some evenings). These may include teaching English Language learners, High School Equivalency Diploma students, and students with low levels of literacy.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate instructors for the delivery of Adult Education and Literacy Instruction.
- Manage intake of Adult Education and Literacy students.
- Conduct day and evening orientation sessions for Adult Education and Literacy students.
- Ensure instructors enter student attendance records.
- Monitor student instructional hours for testing eligibility.
- Manage multiple curriculum platforms.
- Administer state required online assessments for student placement and educational gains.
- Arrange for substitute instructors when necessary.
- Assist with locating and interviewing qualified instructional personnel.
- Train new Adult Education & Literacy staff.
- Assess the need of the professional development opportunities for staff. Arrange the training for staff and ensure it is being properly documented within the statewide tracking program.
- Promote Adult Education and Literacy classes to local agencies and businesses by participating in local community activities.
- Serve as Director in his/her absence or meeting coverage.
- Conduct & review all necessary monthly reports
- Assess as needed initiatives, improvements, or other services for effectiveness and efficiency.
- Assist students in transitioning from a non-credit to credit courses as those students are identified.
- Assist students in transitioning from English Language Learners to the High School Equivalency Diploma program and to college credit classes.
- Maintain certifications for administering state required assessments.
- Participate in national and Iowa Workforce Development meetings and professional development.
- Assist with planning local staff professional development.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required. Teaching experience preferred. Bilingual preferred.
