Description Summary

The Vocal Music Instructor will deliver engaging and effective instruction in music courses while managing and ensuring the effectiveness of the Vocal Music Program. Course assignments will be determined based on qualifications per the Iowa Community Colleges Guideline for Faculty Qualifications. This position may involve teaching through Triton Live networks and traveling to local high schools, academies, and other centers to offer college courses. This position requires effective assessment of student learning with course design and pedagogy that connects students to content, each other, and the world. Additionally, the instructor is expected to participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to cross-departmental initiatives and committees. A commitment to annual reporting, assessment, and alignment with the strategic plan is required, along with maintaining and expanding program articulations with transfer institutions. Conducting NACEP visits and managing necessary documentation may be required. The salary listed reflects the hiring range.

Examples of Duties

Position Specific

  • Rehearse, direct, conduct, and train vocal music ensembles.
  • Develop plans for all rehearsals.
  • Study musical scores.
  • Manage costumes for all ensembles, including assignment, retrieval, ordering, and storage.
  • Coordinate all major music performances with Director of Instrumental Music, including at least two major productions.
  • Coordinate vocal components and auditions for Spring Musical with Director of Theatre and Director of Instrumental Music.
  • Select musical literature suitable for ensembles and appropriate for events.
  • Coordinate with Director Instrumental Music to provide music for Night of Academic Excellence, Veterans' Day, Homecoming, Commencement, and other small events as requested.

  • Effectively organizes and teaches course work in accordance with established and / or developed syllabi.
  • Demonstrates current knowledge of the subject matter being taught by presentations, activities, questions, and responses relevant to the course syllabus.
  • Uses class time to encourage active student involvement in the learning process.
  • Assesses the overall student learning in the class by using multiple classroom assessment techniques, documents the assessment, and uses the assessment data for instructional improvement.
  • Monitors and provides frequent and specific feedback to students regarding the attainment of the learning outcomes and their progress in the course.
  • Consistently displays evidence of organization and planning, including materials being available and the instructional sequence progressing logically.
  • Uses a variety of materials and resources which enhance the teaching of the course objectives.
  • Make use of a variety of teaching techniques and technologies appropriate for the course taught.
  • Develops and utilizes teaching strategies based upon current research.

  • Treats all students with respect and modifies instruction to meet their academic needs.
  • Communicates with students in a positive, impartial manner.
  • Exercises good judgement in dealing with classroom problems and assumes responsibility for those actions.

  • Develops and / or updates courses and course guides as assigned by the Dean.
  • Prepares, distributes, and submits first day handouts for all sections assigned to the faulty member in accordance with Department and College policies.
  • Encourages regular attendance and retention of students, including personally contacting students following absences to offer assistance and concern for their welfare.
  • Meets scheduled classes in accordance with College policy, beginning and ending class sessions according to published schedules.
  • Maintains scheduled office hours to insure accessibility to students and colleagues.
  • Maintains adequate and accurate records on class attendance and student grades. These records are submitted by the faculty member according to College policy and established deadlines.
  • Patriciates in student recruitment.
  • Participates in professional activities which enhance the interaction with adjunct instructors.
  • Requests in written form instructional equipment and supplies for the classroom / laboratory use.
  • College Related

  • Openly supports and promotes the vision / mission of the College and works to achieve the vision / mission of the College.
  • Exercises stewardship of College facilities, equipment, and materials, including properly using College facilities, equipment, and materials, reporting needed repairs, and supervising students regarding use of facilities and equipment.

  • Demonstrates a determined effort to maintain a good relationship with all other employees of the College.

  • Qualifications

  • Applicants must have at least a Master's Degree in Music or Fine Arts, or a Master's Degree in a related field and twelve graduate credit hours in Music, Fine Arts, Music Education, Music Performance, or Cultural Studies as established in the Iowa Department of Education's Iowa Community Colleges Guidelines for Faculty Qualifications.
  • Meet the standards of the Iowa Central Quality Faculty Plan established by the College Board of Trustees.
  • Teaching or training experience preferred.
  • Technology competency for instruction, communication, and professional contributions.
  • Must possess good communication and organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and work as a team member.
