Description Summary

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for accurate, routine testing of samples employing both basic and advanced skills and methodologies. The Laboratory Technician also serves as the Laboratory Safety Manager. The Laboratory Technician reports to the Iowa Central Fuel Testing Laboratory Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

Constant (67-100%)


  • Provide quality customer service to clients, suppliers, College staff and the public.
  • Perform routine testing of fuel samples with knowledge of both basic and advanced testing methods including some chromatographic and spectrographic techniques.
  • Oversee the maintenance and proper completion of instrument log books including sample logs, calibration logs, and maintenance logs.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of instruments and oversee or assist routine instrument maintenance and small repairs.
  • Oversee or assist in maintaining laboratory cleanliness.
  • Assist with the coordination of daily work priorities and assist in communicating priorities to laboratory staff.
  • Perform duties in a manner that is compliant with the BQ-9000, ISO 9001, and ISO 17025 quality programs.
  • Review Certificates of Analysis.
Frequent (34-66%)
  • Perform duties as the Laboratory Safety Manager. Duties include routine testing of safety equipment, monitoring compliance with safety rules and regulations, and performing safety training.
  • Assist with running certified reference standards, maintaining current stocks of certified materials, and ensure the removal and proper disposal of expired reference materials.
  • Oversee or assist in monitoring the inventory of general supplies and chemicals.
Occasional (10-33%)
  • Employ revised or new methods in compliance with BQ-9000, ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 certification standards.
  • Participate in BQ-9000, ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 internal and external audits as required.
  • Participate in management review meetings and other Laboratory meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Science or Applied Science is required, two years laboratory experience is preferred, or any combination of equivalent experience, education and demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) needed to perform the job is required.

GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH OR WITHOUT A REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:
Position involves constant (67-100%) viewing computer screen, close visual work, lifting, standing, kneeling, grasping, reaching, walking, and stooping; frequent (34-66%) lifting (supply boxes up to 70 pounds), boxing and unboxing supply cartons, some general upkeep of the facilities such as cleaning, vacuuming, and emptying trash and recyclables; occasional (10-33%) occasional travel time.
