Adjunct Instructor- Technical Theater, CE

Description

The Musical Theater Department at Iowa Western is seeking a qualified adjunct instructor to teach Technical Theater, a foundational course in scenic construction, technical theater, and backstage production practices. This course introduces students to the principles and practices of set/costume/makeup design and construction, tool safety, stage machinery, and crew responsibilities within the context of live theatrical production. This is a part-time, semester-based appointment with the possibility of renewal based on department needs and instructor performance.

Job Duties

• Teach one or more sections of Technical Theater, including lecture and lab components, following the approved course outline and objectives
• Provide hands-on instruction in safe use of shop tools, scenic construction methods, materials handling, and backstage procedures
• Supervise and mentor students working on technical elements of departmental productions, where applicable
• Maintain regular communication with students and provide timely feedback and evaluation
• Ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment
• Participate in department meetings or production-related planning as appropriate for adjunct faculty
  
  

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelorâs degree in Theater, Technical Theater, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in scenic construction, stagecraft, or technical theater production.
• Previous teaching, instructional, or mentorship experience (can include academic or professional settings).
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students and theater faculty.
• Ability to pass a background check
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Masterâs degree in Theater or related discipline.
• College-level teaching experience.
• Familiarity with community college student populations.
• Experience with theatrical rigging, lighting, or sound design is a plus.
  
  

Physical Demands

• Instruction may take place in-person in a classroom, scene shop, or theater environment.
• Must be able to lift materials (over 50lbs) and operate standard shop equipment (training provided if needed).
• Some evening or weekend hours may be required during production periods.
