Description

Provides brief crisis assessment, brief interventions, case management, and solution- based counseling for a diverse population of students with the goal of maximizing success in the college setting. Assist students in utilizing resources provided, support students in navigating referrals, and assist students in following through on recommendations provided. Collaborates with college staff and external agencies for the benefit of students in need of mental health services.

Job Duties

  • Provide brief, short-term counseling and assessment for students individually, in groups, and through screenings, to help students cope with stressors that are affecting their academic, career or personal goals.
  • Interact and provide educational services to a diverse student population and college, demonstrating cross-cultural counseling competency.
  • Support studentsâ adjustment to college, career related topics and other developmental issues.
  • Ensure that crisis intervention services are available to students on an emergency basis, including safety planning with student, as needed.
  • Work with the Student Life Team to assess and respond to student welfare and related college safety concerns and issues.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, and administrators regarding student mental health issues.
  • Initiate and maintain confidential, complete mental health records for clientele as appropriate and submit reports and recommendations as requested.
  • Plan and implement student health programs to respond to identified needs, and monitor existing programs for effectiveness, applicability and through ongoing quality improvement and program review. Make presentations to students and faculty related to mental health issues.
  • Serve as a resource and primary liaison for the college community on issues of mental health promotion and advocacy, which may include classroom presentations, curriculum and resource material development, committee membership, or staff and faculty presentations.
  • Make appropriate referrals for students both on and off-campus, based on student needs.
  • Provide wrap around services, including psychotherapy and case management, to ensure students are receiving support and assistance needed.
  • Ability to maintain a high caseload.
  • Ability to submit timely and accurate documentation and tracking.
  • Assist students in navigating referrals and resources provided.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development by participating in ongoing staff training, meetings, supervision meetings.
  • Assist with necessary data collection and reports.

Qualifications

  • Ability to assess and make appropriate referrals.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive information and confidentiality with integrity and ethical behavior.
  • Ability to empathize with the community college students.
  • Ability to relate to the full range of studentsâ aspirations, abilities, and educational backgrounds; demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Ability to provide counseling within the framework of the college educational setting.
  • Ability to work with a variety of staff members, as well as faculty, in one-on-one situations, as well as in a team environment.
  • Effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, standards and ethics of professional conduct related to independent practice of psychology, counseling, and related topics in healthcare.
  • Knowledge of the principles, objectives, philosophies of counseling and student support services in relation to the total college experience.
  • Ability to pass a background check have a valid U.S. driver's license and good driving record.

Training Requirements:

  • Experience working with adolescents required; experience providing outreach, case management, short-term counseling, and crisis counseling for students on a college campus strongly preferred.
  • Experience or training in substance abuse issues preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Masterâs degree in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, or related behavioral health field is required.
  • Current clinical license required (PLMHP, LIMHP, LMHP, LISW, TLMHC or LMHC). Iowa licensure preferred.

  • The employee frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, telephone and basic office equipment
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear
  • Ability to drive company owned or personal vehicle.
