Description
The Professional Writing Consultant meets face-to-face and via Zoom on our Council Bluffs campus with students in the Writing Center to provide non-prescriptive, process-based feedback on writing tasks and course assignments. In order to aid long-term student retention of effective process-based writing skills, the consultant assists with the creation of supplementary teaching materials. The consultant also conducts promotional presentations on the services offered through the Writing Center to classes and campus groups as requested by faculty and staff members across various departments. Administrative tasks include the collection of usage data and student feedback surveys.Job Duties
Communicates with students via email or in person regarding questions about upcoming appointments or to follow up after completed sessionsCommunicates with faculty via email regarding students' writing assignmentsConsults face-to-face or via Zoom with individual students or small groups on writing tasks and assignmentsAssists students in understanding assignment purposes, goals, and requirementsProvides non-prescriptive, question-based feedback on draftsAids student writers in creating writing and research plans / outlinesSupports students in developing effective proofreading and editing strategiesFacilitates data collection by accurately logging sessions into the scheduling system and promoting the completion of student satisfaction surveysProvides in-class support for writing courses in the form of outreach and / or workshopsQualifications
Bachelor's degree in English or a related fieldDemonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and disability backgrounds of IWCC studentsStrong comprehension of the English language and thorough understanding of academic writing conventions including styles (e.g., APA, MLA) and genres as well as the professional writing conventions expected of general business communication, cover letters, and resumesExcellent customer service skills requiredStrong organizational skills including the ability to multi-task, to meet deadlines, to maintain and access paper and electronic files, to produce error-free final products, and to manage time and outputExcellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to articulate in both small and large group settings and with diverse groups of people including co-workers and students at various levels from front-line to administrationIllustrates a history of successfully collaborating with coworkers on a regular basis to achieve common goalsProficient use of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)Enthusiastic and dedicated to the challenges of helping other peopleProfessional in communications, appearance, relationships, and responsivenessPositive attitudeAbility to maintain strict confidentiality at all timesSelf-starter with the ability to perform with little or no direct supervisionAbility to pass a background checkPhysical Demands
