Job Description
The Managing Director, Medical Communications leads an agency and takes on a key leadership role with clients and within the network. This senior-level leader will be responsible for all medical, financial, and career oversight for the agency and their team. They will demonstrate finely honed strategic skills, foster the growth of the medical team. They will possess a broader network view of resources and the ability to leverage and bolster those resources to push innovation, meet client needs and exceed their expectations. This leader will be responsible for working with the CMO to build out tangible new department, agency and network offerings that align with and enhance IPG Health’s client, brand and people focused vision. They will keep the President of Medical Communications informed on critical matters.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Knowledge/Expertise
Demonstrate a depth of understanding of assigned products, related medical areas, and competitors as well as an appreciation of the breadth of products/portfolios of business across the agency; demonstrate a deep understanding of our network capabilities as well as those of our competitors; demonstrate deep understanding of the agencies and network’s business
Strategic Skills/Tools
Work closely with Managing Director-Accounts and CMO to develop and update agency offerings. Combine in-depth scientific understanding of the product and disease state with market awareness to provide high-level communication planning for clients; elevate, expand, and refine strategic offerings of the medical strategy department.
Client Relationships
Maintains expert status with clients and drives the overall success of the account(s) with the goal of client/account retention and growth
Business Development
Consistently look for ways to optimize success for the agency and network in the areas of financial management, new business, organic growth. Demonstrate strong medical leadership as part of the core pitch team, both internally and during live presentations
JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Knowledge/Expertise
- Critically review content developed by other medical strategists
- Train their team to distill the medical and scientific information into strategic insights and actionable ideas for brands
- Proactively and proficiently provide strategic medical recommendations based on the changing market to enhance brand communication
- Keep abreast of new and changing trends in our industry to ensure we provide the most “up-to-date” recommendations for our brands
Strategic Skills/Tools
- Proactively identify and execute on medical opportunities that contribute to strategic and tactical development
- Ensure that all direct and indirect reports can demonstrate depth of understanding for multiple products and disease states
- Ensure team understands how to lead and/or co-lead /moderate proprietary workshops
- Ensure teams are optimizing the use of data to tell a viable, differentiating story
- Develop and/or refine best practices toolkits (e.g., medical offerings, new hire onboarding)
- Ensure medical department visibility through medical team-led agency presentations
Client Relationships
- Develop and maintain strong client relations with a focus on client senior management
- Represent agency relations with senior client, while building and strengthening relationships to showcase agency value
- Establish reputation as true partner with client, consistently looking out for the current and future health of brand
- Maintain client confidence in team’s ability
- Leverage experience when managing different pieces of business according to size, brand, category, clients, and US & Global
- Represent the agency well in client engagements, helping senior leads drive growth and opportunity as appropriate
Business Development & Operational Excellence
- Responsible for P&L of agency; act as good steward of agency finances and resources

Represents the agency well in new business engagements, helping senior leads with new business efforts as appropriate and working collaboratively with IPG Health agencies, IPG Health, and IPG as needed on new business efforts
- Ensure team can skillfully lead medical research and development efforts for new business pitches
- Ensure team is highly capable of developing medical insights for pitches
- Identifies and cultivates new business opportunities for agency regularly

- Drives adherence to agency ways of working unless specific business reasons require other ways of working

- Strong experience managing a variety of clients and teams (size, category, structure)
- Clearly communicate (orally and written) medical concepts across multiple pieces of business in a condensed, audience-appropriate way to clients, KOLs, and internal cross-functional teams
- Display ability to digest clinical and brand insights and communicate a POV in real time
- Project confidence as an expert in your assigned brands/therapeutic categories and those of your direct reports
- Experience managing a P&L and solid record of financial accountability
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Adobe Acrobat
- Significant management experience and proven ability to mentor talent
- Significant experience with development and presentation of new business pitch materials

- Work closely with the CMO to ensure appropriate staffing and resources for current business with a forward-looking lens focused on organic growth
- Review and provide feedback on staffing plans for your assigned accounts and those of your direct reports by reasonably estimating the hours required for specific workflows
- Provide department-wide allocation and utilization reports to the CMO and share your POV on the best ways to leverage staff so everyone is fully utilized and reaching their full potential
- Demonstrate fiscal accountability on your portfolio of business and fiscal awareness at the agency level
- Complete timesheets and submit expense reports accurately and on time
Salary : $290,000 - $320,000
