Job Summary:
A Mental Health Counselor will provide professional mental health services to residents of nursing homes, focusing on the unique challenges and needs of older adults. This role involves conducting assessments, offering individual and group counseling, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to enhance residents’ emotional and mental well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct psychological assessments and evaluations for residents to identify emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs.
- Develop and implement individualized counseling plans tailored to each resident’s needs.
- Provide individual and group therapy sessions to address issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, adjustment challenges, and other age-related mental health concerns.
- Collaborate with nursing staff, social workers, and other healthcare providers to create comprehensive care plans.
- Offer support and guidance to families and caregivers of residents to help them understand and cope with the mental health challenges of their loved ones.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions and progress.
- Stay informed about best practices in geriatric mental health and participate in ongoing professional development.
- Assist in crisis intervention and support as needed.
Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Licensure: Active licensure as an LICSW, LMHC, preferred (not required).
- Prior experience working with older adults, preferably in a nursing home, healthcare, or long-term care setting.
- Familiarity with age-related mental health issues such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, and grief counseling.
- Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Empathy and patience in working with older adults and their families.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to mental health care in nursing homes.
