Clinical Lab Scientist
Job Specification
Minimum Education Required: Bachelors Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field and one year clinical education in a clinical laboratory science program accredited by NAACLS.
Or
MLT(ASCP) certification,
AND a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry),
AND two years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and urinalysis/body fluids in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory* within the last four years.
Minimum Experience Required: none or see above
Licensure/Certification Required: Must be MLS(ASCP) or MT(ASCP) or CLS(NCA) or registry eligible Scientists certified after January 1, 2004 must renew their certification every three years by participating in the Certification Maintenance Program. Registry eligible scientists must attain certification within one year of employment.
Skills required (if applicable): Must possess high degree of skill in logical decision-making, observation, intuitive perception and concentration. Must be able to divide attention among several tasks in order to accomplish these tasks simultaneously.
Job Summary
Performs routine and complex laboratory analyses of blood and body fluids, as well as the supporting Quality Control documentation, function verification, instrument care, specimen collection and computer interactions required to complete a laboratory test. Develops procedures, integrates test results, executes corrective actions requiring an advanced level of knowledge and independent professional judgment. After completing orientation, a Clinical Laboratory Scientist works unsupervised and the test results do not need to be reviewed prior to release.
