Iron Fish Distillery is seeking a Production and Facilities Assistant to become part of our production team whose focus is building upon a solid soil-to-craft spirit portfolio of Michigan’s first farm distillery. We set out on our mission of “Returning Spirit to Its Origin'' by making spirits from the ground up on our 120-acre farm, embraced by the region and our state. This production assistant position is central to accomplishing our vision at Iron Fish Distillery:
Reports to: Line supervisor and/or Blending supervisor
General duties include:
- Always keeping safety in mind when at work.
- Developing a general understanding of every facet of the distillation process including but not limited to, mashing, distilling, transferring, preliminary proofing, bottling, barreling, barrel aging, harvesting barrels, Marrying, reporting and storage.
- Work on the bottling line to help accomplish daily production goals
- Work with the blending team to help accomplish daily production goals
- Washing equipment, general cleaning, sanitizing, organizing, and maintenance of the production area, rickhouses, and storage areas including snow shoveling.
- Developing an understanding of our bottling line and the ability to adjust and troubleshoot as needed.
- Develop knowledge of the barrel aging process.
- Marry, proof, ready spirits for bottling according to production schedule.
- Harvest Barrels in accordance with the Production Schedule.
- Use air diaphragm pumps and barrel dumping equipment, to move spirits.
- Roll/Fill barrels by hand according to the Production Schedule.
- Move product in/out of production areas in accordance with production schedule.
- Pull Samples using hand tools from selected product.
- Safely Operate Forklift moving product/materials in and around various warehouses.
- Loading/Unloading trucks using Forklifts, pallet jacks, or dollies.
- Contribute in tasting, selecting, and organizing single barrel products.
- Assisting all departments as needed per the production schedule.
- Tracking supplies inventory and alerting if supplies are running low.
- Take an active role in our preventative maintenance program.
- Help as needed in our fields and vineyard.
- Become and stay knowledgeable about the Michigan State University MAEAP Program. and keep our farm compliant with requirements and standards of our certification.
General Abilities
Requirements:
- Must be able to lift 60 lbs. (bags of grain for example) above head consistently and/or repeatedly.
- Knowledge and skill in general building maintenance and repair
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Positive disposition, good with people (co-workers and visitors).
- Proactive and takes initiative
- Excellent with details and organization of workspace.
- Interest in craft distilling.
- No felonies on your criminal record (required by our state & federal regulators).
- Requires wearing common protective gear
- Requires working in cramped workspaces and getting into awkward positions
- Requires working in hot (above 90 degrees F) or cold (below 32 degrees F) temperatures and exposure to wet/slippery surfaces
- Working around boiling mash/steam and handling high temperature hoses
- Includes exposure to sounds or noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable
- Requires exposure to high places and use of ladder or lifts
- Requires potential exposure to hazardous equipment, conditions, or substances
- Requires meeting deadlines and production goals
- Requires coordinating with others in accomplishment of work activities
- Ability to follow processes and explicit directions
- Flexibility in schedule and changing priorities, including but not limited to extended hours, nights, and weekends.
- Forklift competency within 60 days
- Knowledge and use of tools requiring hand dexterity
- Computer literacy will require use of, but not limited to, email, MS Word, MS Excel, recordkeeping software.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
