Position Summary:

The Abrasive Blaster will set-up and operate blasting machines for all surfaces that are to be coated.

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Clean, mask, prep and coat interior/exterior surfaces and associated areas of freight cars.
  • Remove any railcar parts that do not need to be blasted or painted.
  • Blast the exterior and interior of railcars of old paint, lining, rust, dirt, and grease using hand-controlled guns and hoses.
  • Notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Interpret job work orders to perform required repairs.
  • Coordinate and complete repairs in an efficient manner and within assigned hours.
  • Ensure AAR quality assurance standards are met.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures.
  • Interact with crew members and supervisors in a team environment.
  • Maintain the work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Clean, adjust and maintain equipment, using hand tools.
  • Comply with the established safety policies and support continuing awareness for safety
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Normally Expected Education and/or Practical Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Demonstrated ability to handle outside working conditions is a plus.
  • Preferred Candidates will have 3 years railcar experience, or general abrasive blasting experience.
  • Familiar with tools and machinery required to perform minor railcar repairs.
  • Experience hydroblasting, sandblasting, or sponge jet blasting is a plus.
  • Ability to read and comprehend basic drawings and scope of work.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Frequent exposure to loud noises.
  • Continually required to stand, walk, bend, crouch and climb.
  • Continually required to use hands and fingers and reach with arms.
  • Frequently required to lift up to 75 lbs and team lift up to 150 lbs.
  • Must be able to physically enter rail cars, handle confined spaces and heights.
  • Use of respirator as required.
  • Continually required to talk or hear.
  • Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
