DEPARTMENT: Transportation Department


This position is eligible for a Letter of Assurance.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for training all drivers and attendants in methods necessary for the safe transportation of students and staff. Investigate accidents involving district vehicles. Coordinate safety practices for the department, lead and participate in employee training activities of the Transportation Department to ensure that school and transportation
employees are optimally trained to operate a district school bus and adequately serve the transportation needs of students. The position is responsible for developing, coordinating, supervising, and presenting all facets of school bus driver training to include behind-the-wheel and classroom instruction. This position ensures that drivers meet federal, state, and local regulations/qualifications for operating a school bus. The position is also responsible for developing, coordinating, and
enforcing all facets of the transportation safety program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:

High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is highly recommended
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification preferred
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License - Class A or B CDL with P and S endorsements
  • Ability to pass annual DOT physical examination and random drug testing
  • Train the Trainer Certification preferred
  • Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate or a valid Enrollment Certificate
  • Acquire and maintain Specialist level certification or obtain through Texas Association for Pupil Transportation preferred (TAPT Trainer preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to safely operate bus

Minimum Experience:
Three [3] years of experience in transportation operations, public school district
experience preferred, or three [3] years of experience in a related field

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES:
1. Train new drivers and assist in obtaining CDL License with P and S endorsements.
2. Provide in-service training on driver safety and accident prevention.
3. Train drivers and attendants to properly use wheelchair lifts and tie-downs, safety vests,
and car seats.
4. Provide CPR training for department employees.
5. Coordinate the investigation of all District Fleet Accidents and report to the Director and
Risk Management.
6. Assist the Police Department with investigations of accidents involving district vehicles.
7. Train drivers and attendants in bus evacuation techniques.
8. Oversee bus evacuation program for all district students and school staff as the law
requires.
9. Coordinate school bus safety programs at schools.
10. Conduct charter bus inspections.
11. Provide suburban driver training and check-outs for District teachers and other staff.
12. Assist Transportation Manager in the supervision of Bus Video Program.
13. Provide video recording and duplication for archival and evidentiary purposes.
14. Assist the Transportation Manager in the investigation of driving complaints on
Department employees.
15. Drive or attend on a school bus as needed.
16. Complete state reporting for Bus Accident Reporting System (BARS) as required by the
state.
17. Conducts operational assessments by riding on routes and field trips to perform
behind-the-wheel evaluations of drivers, makes random field observations, checks bus
video, observes pre-trip inspections, visits bus stops, drives streets, checks on
construction, and roadway conditions, etc.
18. All other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.

Trainers, Bus Monitors, and NON-CDL Bus Driver Trainees

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must demonstrate the
ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret

procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Occasional prolonged and irregular
hours.

Tools/Equipment Used: Calculator, computer, buses, trucks, vans, copy machine, fax
machine, distance measuring instruments, video equipment, cameras, and radar gun.

Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping,
pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and
wrists

Lifting: Occasional lifting or moving items 30 pounds or under, unless restricted.

Physical Demands/Environment Factors: Frequent travel of school district bus routes;

Occasional prolonged and irregular hours; Prolonged use of computer; Prolonged
walking, bending, stooping, ascending and descending bus steps, sitting and standing
for extended periods may be required. May be assigned varied work hours depending on
the needs of the department.; Exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures any time
of the day or night

Mental Demands: Effective communication skills (verbal and written); Accurate
interpretation of policy and procedures; Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
Responds appropriately in emergencies; Maintains emotional control under stressful
conditions

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules
and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing
personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately
to the supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain
workplace safety.
