Job Goal

Provide hearing-impaired students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials according to ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, department, home setting, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree

Valid Texas Teacher's Certificate with deaf education endorsement.

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of special needs of students with hearing impairments

Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee process and IEP goal setting process and implementation

General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Receptive and expressive sign language skills (level determined by student's needs)

Knowledge of hearing aid equipment

Ski-Hi Parent Advisor needs special training

Experience

At least one year of student teaching or approved internship.

Instructional Strategies

MAJOR PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

• Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of the staff to develop Individual Education Plans (IEP) through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process for each student assigned.
• Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence or preparation as required.
• Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodations for individual needs of students assigned.
• Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist students included in regular classes with assignment.
• Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
• Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use results for instructional activities.
• Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by the IEP.
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
• Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s).
• Use appropriate technologies in the teaching/learning process.
• Train, supervise, and evaluate parents of hearing-impaired infants and toddlers.
• Train, supervise and evaluate PELE High School students.
• Train, supervise, and evaluate assigned practicum students and student teachers from universities.
• Use an appropriate methodology of communication for each individual student.
• Incorporate speech and auditory training skills into curriculum.
• Emphasize language development throughout the school day.

• Consistently assess student achievement through formal/informal testing.
• Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and/or feeding of students.
• Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and approved by the school.
• Present a positive role model for students that support the mission of the school district.
• Consult with regular classroom teachers regarding academic success in the regular classroom.
  
  

Classroom Management And Organization

• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Manage student behavior and administer discipline including crisis intervention and physical restraint of students according to IEP.
• Consult with regular classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
• Consult with district and outside resource personnel regarding the education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  
  

Communication

• Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents on a consistent basis.
• Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
• Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
• Maintain documentation of communication with parents and other professionals.
• Act as an interpreter for students in special area classes, programs, assemblies, announcements, and ARD Committee meetings, etc.

• Attend various conferences and/or workshops designed specifically for educators of the deaf.
  
  

Policy Implementation

• Keeps informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
• Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
• Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
• Adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics.
  
  

Working Conditions

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Ability to communicate (verbal, written, and sign language); ability to instruct; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

Coordinate programming for students in a variety of educational settings with multiple interventions. Use of total communication for extended periods of time. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Moderate lifting and carrying.
