Department: TeenWorks 

Position Type: LTE, 40 hours per week

Hours: Mon - Fri 9:00a-5:00pm 

Salary: $20/hr.

Position Description

The Middle School (MS) Program Coordinator is responsible for creating, implementing, monitoring and facilitating programming for middle school aged youth. Focusing primarily on our program pillars of; Academic development and support, Promoting community engagement and life skills development, engaging youth in health and wellness experiences and education. is responsible for creating, implementing, monitoring and growing gender specific programs as a component of the overall LOFT out of school program. The Middle School Program Coordinator provides a connection between youth, the center, schools and the community. This position delivers programming aimed at empowering youth in all aspects of their lives by delivering programming through the LOFT logic model. This role works with other GCC staff to develop community partnerships, recruit and support teen programs offered by and in conjunction with other youth development entities, non-profits and community groups using GCC for youth directed programs. The Middle School Coordinator supports the day-to-day operation and reporting for CLC and LOFT programming at the Goodman Community Center.  


Essential Functions

  • Support the development, preparation, and supervision of LOFT activities for youth. 
  • Observe and practice policies and procedures of the program.
  • Support youth attendance tracking, recording meal counts, and transportation. 
  • Promote and empower youth voice through building and maintaining mentoring relationships.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up for youth meals, snacks, and program activities. 
  • Participate in team and other meetings as necessary. 
  • Perform other job-related duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties of this position.
  • Develop weekly lesson/tutoring plans to ensure plans are linked to school day goals and outcomes. These are reviewed bi-weekly with the program manager.
  • Research and implement a positive youth development curriculum for young men.
  • Develop a consistent, regular and accurate program schedule for young men that can be widely distributed to students, fellow staff and families. Goal is a diverse schedule with programming that supports competency development, academic support, health and wellness, career exploration and recreational opportunities.
  • Assist in the development and support of a middle and high school leadership youth board that meets on a regular basis and is engaged in LOFT programming. Market and promote these programs, supervising registration and confirmation of participants.
  • Collaborate with the other LOFT Coordinators and Volunteer Manager to plan and facilitate mentorship relationships and opportunities for MS young men 
  • Identify and maintain a caseload of vulnerable youth’s academic and social progress. Maintain case management materials in collaboration with LOFT team.  
  • Be a regular presence at partnering schools (O’Keefe, Whitehorse, East high school). Meet monthly with the appropriate staff and principal. Attend various club meetings, extra-curricular events, classes and lunch times where connections with MS and HS students can be established and maintained. 
  • Promote peer mentorship initiatives between MS and HS young men in program.  
  • Complete data collection as required. 
  • Assist in the collection and updating of all required paperwork. 
  • Promote skill building, mentorship and positive attitudes through the 6 Goodmanship values of strong character.
  • Monitor and share program, staff, volunteer, and family successes or concerns to the Middle School Manager and the Assistant Director of Youth Programs on a consistent basis. 
  • Support center outreach efforts to youth living in inequitably resourced areas served by the Goodman Community Center to encourage their engagement. 
  • Monitor interactions with youth and work with staff on positive language, positive behavior management, conflict resolution and youth engagement. 
  • Participate in planning and implementation of GCC wide family engagement programming. Maintain assigned youth’s student portfolios and ensure all required paperwork and other permissions and approvals are on hand, as needed throughout the year. 
  • Assist with adherence to standards and ensure the quality of program meets all contract or grant obligations. 
  • Support a high-quality volunteer management program by supporting and training volunteers and by communicating volunteer needs and feedback to the volunteer coordinator. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Coordinate all aspects of middle school program (including independent schedules of gender-specific programming, Fit Youth Initiative Leagues, mini-courses, and field trip options, etc.)
  • Provide structure and oversight for academic case management for middle school participants in need of additional support, through consistent communication with school day staff and families of participants. 
  • Serve as main point of contact, and communicate consistently with families of participants about program calendars, family events and case management.  
  • Participate as a member of the MERIT (Madison Empowering Responsibility in Teens) Team, supporting delivery of MERIT programming to LOFT youth. 
  • Maintain up to date records of students’ participation for all Middle School CLC programming. 
  • Monitor academic progress throughout the school year to ensure accurate reporting and data collection is taking place. 
  • Support the system for gathering Community Learning Center (CLC) grant data. Work with the Middle School Manager to establish communication process to share data for reporting several times during the school year/summer cycle. 
  • Provide support to TEENworks Coordinators ensuring linkages between health and wellness, life-skills, entrepreneurship, and employability programs. 
  • Participate in required continuing education hours and professional development opportunities. 
  • Regularly check and respond to email and other internet-based sharing tools as a function of effective communication both within LOFT programming and with GCC center wide. 

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Pass Background Check (National/County Criminal, Global Watchlist, SSN Trace, Sex Offender)
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report to be trained to drive a GCC van.
  • 2 years working in an after-school setting/youth program planning.
  • Preferred prior experience working with middle/high school age youth.
  • Preferred already established connections with Dane Co. school districts and alternative programs.
  • Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), facilitating, and leadership skills. 
  • Mature attitude, creative, resourceful, and a positive role model for youth. 
  • Excellent written and verbal comprehension and communication..
  • Ability to use computers daily in an interactive manner for extended periods of time as necessary.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational, facilitating, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with: problem solving; recognize when something is wrong or is likely to go
  • wrong; behavior management; and conflict de-escalation/resolution
  • Understanding of, appreciation for, and experience with ability, gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economically, ethnically and culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in multiple environments (i.e. indoors, outdoors, schools, office, and out of office).
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours based on program needs.
  • Desired but not Required A.B.A. in Education, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field.
