What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2025-2026 - Health Center - School Nurse (Part-Time) position at Isidore Newman School?
The School Nurse is responsible for implementing health and safety policies and procedures of Newman along with assisting in educating community members on how to avoid communicable diseases and the importance of proper hygiene. The School Nurse is an experienced registered nurse who is able to respond to the health and wellness needs of the children, faculty, staff, and administrators in the school community. The School Nurse should be able to take initiative and direction, be a team player, flexible, and be willing to learn. As well as being nurturing, compassionate, observant and an overall positive role model for young people. This position reports to the Associate Head of School.
Responsibilities
- To ensure the physical health and well-being of the Newman community
- Provide on-site emergency and general healthcare to children ages 6 weeks and up, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Medication administration to children
- Assesses and evaluate sick or injured community members during work hours and provide the appropriate care
- Serve as liaison between school administrators, families, and healthcare providers to ensure a healthy environment
- Coordinate referrals to healthcare providers if needed
- Collect and approve students' health charts during the summer.

- Follow routines and protocols as outlined by within the Health Center including but not limited to:
- Carry out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of bloodborne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal
- Share children's allergy lists to all pertinent staff and administrators
- Transition children safely to and from responsible parties
- Respond to medical and health needs both indoors and outdoors on campus. This may require motions including climbing stairs, walking, squatting or kneeling
- An ability to lift 30 pounds
- Sanitize Health Center, Annex, equipment and materials frequently and at the end of shift
- Utilize Health Center management systems to record health center visits and health checks
- Complete and submit incident forms, ensuring that all applicable parties have documented all pertinent details
- Ensure confidentiality and professionalism
- Adhere to the policies and procedures of Newman at all times
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree (preferred)
A minimum of 2 years of experience as a full-time registered nurse with experience in pediatrics, community health, or related field (required)
Basic Life Support Certification/CPR certified (required)
Committed to developing and maintaining strong relationships with community members
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Word and Excel
Ideal Availability: Two set days per week, 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
