What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Building Official position at Islamorada, Village of Islands?
Primary Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, reviews, supervises and participates in the administration of building, electrical, plumbing and gas/mechanical codes through review of submitted applications and plans.
- Participates in the selection, placement, supervision, promotion, training, safety, appraisal and discipline of assigned employees.
- Maintains knowledge and awareness of changes and trends in applicable building codes; formulates policy and implements procedural changes as necessary to ensure effective plan review activities.
- Explains applicable codes, regulations and policies to architects, builders, contractors, journeymen, the general public and assigned employees.
- Manages department contracts.
- Makes decisions on questions of department policy affecting building codes, and applicable ordinances and regulations.
- Represents the division at assigned meetings.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Responsible for assisting the Chief Building Official with the regulatory administration and supervision of plan review, enforcement, inspection of building construction, and alteration projects that require compliance with state and local codes.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of building construction, building codes and permitting.
- Knowledge of organization, field operations and problems of municipal government.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental officials, other municipal employees, professional groups, regional, state and Federal Planning and Development agencies and general public.
- Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, orally and in writing.
- Ability to work with database software and standard office support software.
Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record. Must have at least ten (10) years of experience as an architect, engineer, inspector, contractor, or superintendent of construction and five (5) years of supervisory or managerial experience, or any other equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must apply for a State of Florida Provisional Building Official license upon hire and obtain a State of Florida Standard Building Official’s License within one (1) year from date of hire. Must have a State of Florida Standard Inspector license. Building required, additional trades preferred. Must have a State of Florida Standard Plans Examiner license. Building required, other traders preferred.

The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Tasks involve walking, standing, bending, climbing, stooping, some unassisted lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Tasks may require prolonged periods of visual concentration and require moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Salary : $75,000 - $100,000
