What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Prevention & Inspector position at Islamorada, Village of Islands?
The Fire Prevention and Inspector will be responsible for managing all areas of the Fire Department’s fire inspection, plan review, and prevention programs. The Fire Prevention and Inspector will be responsible for the administration and enforcement of fire and life safety codes pursuant to Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code and the Islamorada, Village of Islands Fire Code. Functions and activities of the Fire Prevention and Inspector include administration, code inspections and enforcement, construction plans and specification review, public fire and life safety education, fire investigation, research, statistics, and evaluation. The Fire Prevention and Inspector functions at all times under the direction and control of the Department Fire Chief through the Assistant Fire Chief and issues all Fire Safety orders in the Fire Chief’s name and by his authority.

- This position requires the use of an assigned emergency vehicle and for 24/7 emergency response, when necessary.
- Operates firefighting, EMS apparatus and equipment, and other vehicles.
- Prepares correspondence and inspection reports, handles complaints, maintains records, performs research, interprets codes, implements policy, testifies at legal proceedings, pre-fire surveys and pre-fire plans, and creates forms and job aids.
- Conducts fire safety and code enforcement inspections and analyses of new and existing structures and properties for construction, occupancy, fire protection, and exposures. Issues Fire Safety Inspection Notices and Fire Safety Violations or Deficiencies.
- Reviews and approves plans and specifications that meet the intent of applicable codes and standards for fire and life safety and building construction and processes.
- Serves as a liaison between the Fire Rescue Department, Building, Planning and Development Services Department, other agencies and organizations, and the general public.
- Assist during major emergencies and disasters as directed. On call pending disasters or other related emergencies and subject to recall as soon as conditions permit post disaster.
- Develop and coordinate the delivery of public fire and life safety educational programs, including program budgets. Ensure that the information to be provided is accurate, relevant to the issue, and comprehensible to the audience. Documents all elements of the programs.
- Develop a fire and life safety inspections program for fire suppression personnel. Inspection procedures are to include, as a minimum, conducting building surveys, correcting common problems concerning life safety conditions, locating and citing fire hazards, checking use and storage of hazardous materials, and oversee testing fire protection systems.
- Assists in the training of fire suppression personnel to conduct fire and life safety inspections and pre-fire planning.
- Oversee incident reports, plans review, fire inspection, and fire and life safety education activities within the Village.
- Perform as an instructor when needed in the classroom or in the field training of personnel.
Associates Degree in Fire Science or equivalent amount of comparable education and experience required. Five (5) years experience in fire rescue supervisory level, preferably in fire prevention. Must have the following certifications with the State of Florida: Certified Firefighter, Certified EMT or Paramedic, Certified Fire Inspector, Certified Fire Instructor, current Advanced Life Support card if paramedic. Preferred professional qualifications for Fire/Arson Investigator and Public Fire and Life Safety Educator. Training in management, control and mitigation of hazardous materials incidents; training in emergency management and disaster response, planning and mitigation.
Must be trained, experienced and otherwise qualified to drive fire apparatus and emergency medical care vehicles, and maintain the appropriate class of Florida driver’s license; and completion of an approved EVOC course in accordance with Florida Statutes.
Physical Requirements:
Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping and heavy lifting while wearing protective equipment; work in inclement weather conditions. Must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one (1) year immediately preceding application, and sign a sworn statement attesting to this fact as required by Florida Statutes. Must be capable of performing all assigned duties. Work required extreme physical exertion and/or physical strain to the point of fatigue. Consequently, physical fitness is an essential requirement for the position. Work environment involves exposure to job hazards where there is a high possibility of injury.
Work Environment:
Work in an emergency firefighting environment; work in medical emergency situations, including vehicle accidents, water rescues; work in intense life-threatening conditions; exposure to fire, smoke, bodily fluids, water, heights and noise.
