Three Corrections Deputy positions are actively being recruited until filled. This notice is to seek applicants to participate in the Civil Service Examination for Corrections Deputy. All classified employees/positions within the Sheriff's Office require a Civil Service Examination.
When the position is open it will be a full-time position sworn (Commissioned) position within the Island County Sheriff's Office. Deputy performs a variety of duties and responsibilities in the Corrections and Detention facility located at the Island County seat in the Town of Coupeville. Corrections Deputies work in a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week maximum-security jail to maintain facility security by: receiving, booking, maintaining custody of, escorting, transporting, caring for and overseeing offenders. They are also responsible to model pro-social behaviors and promote positive correctional practices.

APPLICATION PROCESS: The application process is designed to determine your eligibility and is part of the Civil Service Examination process.
- Applicants must complete an Island County Application for Employment powered by NEOGOV https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/islandcounty as well upload to it the documents listed below in items 2,3, 4 and 5.Have these documents ready prior to submitting your application so that you are able to upload them as Attachments.
- Applicants must answer the Supplemental Questions.
- Upload to your NEOGOV application a completed Authorization to Release Information form.
- Upload to your NEOGOV application a cover letter and a resume, and any other documents you feel support your abilities to perform as a corrections deputy.
- Upload to your NEOGOV application a completed Personal History Statement (PHS) PHS - Fill in form. If you already have a similar document from a previous position, may submit it but you must provide any missing information. This information can be in a separate document but it too must be uploaded to your application.
Please include a cover letter and resume. Reference letters from current or previous supervisor, current or former co-worker/peer and personal reference letters should be included with your application packet. Completed application materials including application forms, certificates, cover letter and resume and reference letters will be evaluated as part of the Civil Service Examination process.

After your application form has been reviewed and accepted, you will be notified, by email, as to when/how the Civil Service examinations will be administered. You must satisfactorily pass the Civil Service Examination(s) in order to be placed on the Lateral Entry Eligibility Register. Applicants who do not meet qualifications A – C (below) will not be contacted. Incomplete applications will not be considered and you will not be contacted.
CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY REGISTER: The names of qualified candidates resulting from continuous examinations shall be entered on the eligible register. Certifications for appointments shall be made in the same manner as from any eligible register. Names of eligibles from successive examinations in the same program shall be entered on the eligible register for the class at the appropriate places as determined by final scores. Applicants will be certified from the register to fill vacant positions in accordance with local Civil Service Rules. Names of qualified eligibles who are entered on a register as a result of a Continuous Examination shall expire one year from the date their name is entered on the register.
CIVIL SERVICE SELECTION PROCESS: Vacancies are filled by the Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five eligibles forwarded to the appointing authority (Sheriff) for interview and background investigation, as vacancies occur. Applicants given a conditional offer of employment are subject to further processes including polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical examination and background investigation. All appointments are subject to successful completion of a one year probationary period as set forth in the Civil Service Rules for Island County Sheriff's Department Section 11.02 or its successor.

Civil Service Examination process. You must complete an Island County Application for Employment form for this position and the Supplemental Questions. To qualify as a lateral candidate you must have:
A. Completed the WSCJTC Basic Corrections Academy or a WSCJTC-recognized equivalency academy.
B. Two years of employment within Washington State as a full-time, paid corrections deputy/officer with general corrections experience and have successfully passed the probationary period with a previous law enforcement employer.
C. No more than a 24 month break in service since your most recent law enforcement employer.
Washington Department of Corrections Laterals graduating from CORE after 2008 will be required to successfully complete the WSCJTC Corrections Officers Equivalency Academy .
(1) Minimum age of 21 years at the time of appointment.
(2) Possess a valid Washington State Driver's License at the time of appointment.
(3) United States Citizen or a lawful permanent resident who can read and write the English language as set forth in RCW 41.14.100.
(4) Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
(5) Good physical and mental health.
(6) Meet minimum weight and height standards.
(7) Vision, uncorrected 20/100, corrected to 20/20 on both eyes.
(8) Become a member of the Corrections Guild.
