POSITION SUMMARY
The Full-time Temporary (no benefits) Sr. Reporter for EdSurge is responsible for producing high-quality, high-impact journalism articles covering Early Childhood and K-12 around the broad topics of technology and innovation, classroom instruction and experiences, and trends in education and policy that impact teaching and learning. This role requires outstanding reporting and writing abilities, as well as the capacity to work independently and contribute to the overall editorial strategy of EdSurge.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting and Writing
- Reports, writes, and publishes 4 to 6 high-quality, high-impact journalism articles per month, as assigned
- Works with editors to conceive, design, execute, and publish feature stories and projects, which may require traveling to report on the ground and/or creating and editing multimedia
- Develops and maintains networks of sources relevant to assigned beats
- Develops expertise relevant to assigned beats
- Pitches strong story ideas relevant to assigned beats
- Converts story ideas from editors into articles, as assigned
Editing and Production
- May edit occasional staff articles, as needed and assigned
- Completes web production for articles, as assigned
Quality and Compliance
- Produces work in accordance with AP Style and EdSurge house style
- Meets assigned deadlines
- Conducts all work in accordance with journalism best practices and ethics
Communication and Collaboration
- Maintains regular, timely, respectful, and constructive communication with editors and colleagues via email, Slack, and phone/video call tools
- Meets weekly with manager; available for additional meetings as assigned
- Actively participates in team meetings
- Participates in company meetings
SALARY RANGE: $25.00 – $30.00 per hour, depending upon experience.
FULL-TIME TEMPORARY: This is a full-time (up to 40 hours) position; however, no benefits are offered. The temporary duration is expected to be no more than five (5) months.
PRIORITY WILL BE PROVIDED TO CANDIDATES LIVING IN THE DC METRO AREA (MD, DC, or Northern VA); you will be REQUIRED to come into the Arlington, Virginia, office one day per week.
Qualifications
Knowledge
- In-depth understanding of journalism best practices and ethics
- Thorough knowledge of AP Style
- Strong grasp of current trends and issues in education and technology
Skills and Abilities
- Outstanding journalism reporting and writing abilities
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Capacity to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Proficiency in web production and content management systems
- Familiarity with social media platforms and newsletter writing
- Excellent editing skills a plus
Experience
- Proven track record of producing high-quality journalism articles
- Experience in developing and maintaining source networks
- Background in education reporting preferred
- Familiarity with multimedia content creation a plus
