What are the responsibilities and job description for the Early Childhood Substitute Teacher position at Ithaca Montessori School?
The Substitute Teacher position at Ithaca Montessori School (IMS) requires love, patience, and respect for children ages 3 months - 6 years old. Substitute Teachers support children in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth following the philosophies of Maria Montessori by performing the duties described below. Substitute Teachers support their Lead Teachers in modeling the IMS Mission and Values and Montessori principles for the children and families of the children in their classroom.
Substitute Teachers work with children ranging in age from 3 months to 6 years. The ability to be flexible and adapt to the needs of children at various stages of development is important to this position.
Schedule: M-F as needed during the hours of 7:45 am and 5:30 pm - Tuesday and Thursdays are the greatest need currently
Basic Qualifications:
- Education and Experience to meet the New York State Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS) Assistant Teacher Requirements (High School Diploma or Equivalent OR one year of experience working with children less than 13 years old)
- Educational background in Early Childhood, Child Development, or related field is preferred
- Pass all background checks required by OCFS
- Meets school/state health requirements, including TB test, immunizations, and physical.
- Able to lift 50 pounds.
- Able to squat, stand, and sit for 2 hours or more at a time.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- General: Arrive promptly to ensure the classroom is prepared for children. Understand and comply with all OCFS regulations, and maintain ongoing professional development commensurate with hours worked.
- Safety: Support classroom staff in maintaining proper staff-to-child ratios, ensuring children are properly signed in and out by authorized transporters, maintaining a clean, orderly environment, and supporting safety and emergency procedures.
- Children and Curriculum: Support the lead teacher in preparing and maintaining the classroom environment. Assist in supporting children in material choices and behavioral choices, and ensure children are supervised at all times.
- Communications: Communicate professionally and in a timely manner with fellow staff members, administrators, and families.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $16.14 - $16.75 per hour
Expected hours: 5 – 25 per week
