About Us : Local 49 represents 15,000 men and women across Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota in many different facets of the construction industry. We represent heavy equipment operators / mechanics and stationary engineers who work in the following industries : road, highway and bridge construction; building construction; housing development; river dredging and port work; oil and natural gas pipeline construction and maintenance; fiber optic and other utility installation and repair; mining iron ore, silica sand, and precious metal; logging; sand and gravel pits; asphalt and concrete plants; wind and solar construction / maintenance; coal, nuclear, and natural gas power plants; drilling; equipment rental / maintenance shops; city, county, school district, and township construction and maintenance; water and wastewater plant operators at Metropolitan Council and other locations.
Position Summary : We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Labor Staff Attorney to support the mission of our labor union. The Staff Attorney will play a critical role in advancing the unions legal objectives, representing its members, and ensuring compliance with labor laws. This position involves providing legal advice, advocating for workers rights, and assisting in collective bargaining efforts.
Qualifications :
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the bar in Minnesota.
- Minimum ten (10) years of experience in labor law, employment law, or a related field (experience in union-side representation is strongly preferred).
- Strong knowledge of labor laws, including the NLRA, FLSA, PELRA, and OSHA regulations.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Ability to handle multiple cases and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to workers rights and the labor movement.

Job Requirements and Conditions of Employment :
This position is at-will, meaning employment may be terminated at any time, with or without cause, and with or without advance notice.
Applicants must possess a valid drivers license with an excellent driving record and comply with the requirements of Section 504 of the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA) and any other applicable laws. The job requires a person who is alert, outgoing and adept in their relations with many kinds of people (union members, business proprietors, officials in the labor movement, and employer association representatives). A Staff Attorney must demonstrate common sense, diplomacy, strong interpersonal skills and professionalism in both appearance and attitude always. Excellent computer skills, and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Outlook Express are required.
