GENERAL PURPOSE:

Prepares crossing zone and assists children in crossing streets safely.  This is a non-sworn seasonal position.  Workdays correspond with the local school schedule.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direct supervision of the School Crossing Guard Supervisor and under the general supervision of the Public Safety Captain.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None – this is not a supervisory position.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.  The list of tasks is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)


  1. Prepare school crossing zone by turning on warning lights, and placing traffic cones in the street, prior to the arrival of the children. 
  2. Escort children safely across the street as they arrive. 
  3. Watch traffic closely and stop vehicles as necessary. 
  4. Remove traffic cones and turn off warning lights once school is in session and/or no children are present. 
  5. Repeat this process during the school day when children travel to and from school. 
  6. Act as a liaison between children, parents, school administrators, and the P.T.A. 
  7. Participate in special events as asked by supervisors, school administrators, or the P.T.A.
  8. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Special Qualifications:

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen.
  2. Valid Utah Driver’s License.
  3. Must either reside in Ivins City or Santa Clara City or within ten (10) miles of said cities’ limits.


Education and Experience:

  1. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.


Knowledge:

  1. Knowledge of current traffic laws and procedures related to school zones.
  2. Knowledge of basic emergency procedures.
  3. English – Knowledge of the English language, including proper structure, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.


Skills:

  1. Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  2. Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  3. Time Management – Managing one’s own time efficiently.
  4. Speaking – Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  5. Critical Thinking – Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  6. Judgment & Decision Making – Considering the advantages and disadvantages of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  7. Social Perceptiveness – Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do.


Abilities:

  1. Oral Comprehension – The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  2. Oral Expression – The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  3. Written Expression – The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
  4. Written Comprehension – The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  5. Problem Sensitivity – The ability to recognize when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
  6. Near Vision – The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  7. Far Vision – The ability to see details at a distance.
  8. Hearing – The ability to hear normally, with or without a hearing aid.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Some light to moderate physical activity that may require walking, standing, stooping, bending sitting, and/or reaching; lifting, pushing and/or pulling of light weights up to 15 pounds. 
  2. Required to work outdoors in desert climate. 
  3. Moderate exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
