Pharmacy Manager

Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Pharmacy Operations, The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for overall pharmacy operations at their assigned pharmacy. This involves oversight of all tasks being performed in the pharmacy and management of the process flow, staff assignments, staff supervision and handling of patient escalations or client issues as needed.  The Pharmacy Manager is directly responsible for the daily clinical operations of the entire pharmacy department and the management of personnel including Staff Pharmacists and Staff Technicians. 

The Pharmacy Manager will work with the AWP Pharmacy Management Team to create, update, approve and distribute a comprehensive policy and procedure library. The Pharmacy Manager will be responsible for coordinating training of all pharmacy staff in their job functions. 

What You’ll Do 

• Act as the designated Manager of Record for the Pharmacy 

• Manage the daily operations of the Pharmacy Department, including oversight of staff  pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy technician trainees, and pharmacy interns 

• Directly oversee and manage all Staff Pharmacists and Technicians 

• Work with the AWP Pharmacy Management Team to ensure complete regulatory compliance to both State and Federal Law and Regulations 

• Participate in continuing quality improvement activities for all staff including identifying and resolving opportunities for staff education and process improvements 

• Review and verify patient orders, assist providers in making clinical decisions.   

• Perform all duties of a staff pharmacist including order entry and prescription preparation.  

• Verification of prescriptions prepared by technicians and pharmacy staff. 

• Ensure strict compliance with all standardized professional policies and procedures 

• Work with the Pharmacy Management Team to select and hire pharmacy staff including pharmacists, technicians, and support staff. 

• Duties and responsibilities relative to Performance Improvement Plans include: 

• Assisting with the overall development and implementation of employee Performance Improvement Plans as needed 

• Assisting in the identification and documentation of performance improvement expectations 

• Coordinating, participating in, and reporting of all education and activities included in the Performance Improvement Plan and outcome 

• Provide clinical/drug information and counselling to AWP patients and staff  

• Assist with the development, application, analysis, and feedback of clinical performance measurement indicators, processes, and audits  

• Ensures staffing levels are acceptable to provide pharmacy services, make specific assignments as appropriate, and maintain appropriate pharmacist : technician ratio at all times 

• Provides drug information, including adverse drug reactions and contraindications.  

• Oversight of pharmacy inventory processes, including review and improvement of current procedures to improve patient outcomes and regulatory adherence while maximizing pharmacy revenue. 

• Works with the AWP Pharmacy Management Team to conduct regulatory required inventories, investigate potential drug losses, and report confirmed drug losses as required per law 

• Develops, implements, monitors and participates in QA activities within the department and throughout AWP.  

• Proactive in addressing issues or service concerns requiring inter-department or intradepartmental coordination.  

• Monitor daily workflow, prioritizing and reassigning employees as needed to meet AWP Service Level Agreements 

• Oversees daily pharmacy and clinical operations to ensure the pharmacy is maintaining the highest level of clinical effectiveness while keeping service commitments whenever possible 

• Manage weekly and monthly schedule of their direct reports, approve PTO requests, and ensuring adequate staffing levels in the pharmacy at all times.   

• Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to relate to healthcare personnel, proven success in working cooperatively and collaboratively to resolve problems, as well as effectively communicating within and outside of the department. 

• Focus on bringing real-time patient, prescriber, and client problems to successful and satisfactory resolution 

• Ensures compliance with privacy, regulatory, and safety practices are met daily 

• Implements clinical programs designed to improve clinical outcomes for the patient  and drive performance to meet business goals.   

• Mentoring of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy interns to increase their clinical, operational, counselling and management skills. 

• Development and maintenance of internal formularies to drive operational workflows or adhere to state regulations to meet business needs 

 
What You’ll Need to Succeed 

Knowledge/Education: 

• Registered Pharmacist (5 years preferred) 

• Experience in prior management role leading a team of employees 

• Retail, long term care, or mail-order administrative and management experience 

• Computer system knowledge and pharmacy technology experienced 

Skills: 

• Excellent organizational and communication skills both orally and written  

Abilities: 

• Ability to manage, motivate and develop staff 

• Ability to work collaboratively to drive operational improvements 

• Ability to work a flexible schedule consisting of days, evenings and weekends 

• High degree of regulatory and clinical knowledge
