Terms of Employment:  Nine (9) months, academic school year

Hours:  8:00am - 3:00pm, Monday through Friday

 

Education: High School Diploma or High School Equivalency

 

Qualifications: Background or interest in medical procedures and cares of children. Successful completion of the UAP certification with the North Dakota Board of Nursing (NDBON) or from another state registry recognized by the NDBON within one month of employment.

 

Job Goal: UAP’s are trained to function in an assistive role to the registered nurse in the provision of care activities as delegated by and under the supervision of the registered nurse. Employees in this position are trained to supplement the services of school nurses by assisting students requiring care management of their condition or diagnosis.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: 

  1. Provide care and safety for students with medical needs within the school building.
  2. Demonstrate competency and safety in performing cares such as diabetic care tasks, blood glucose monitoring, urine or blood ketone testing, insulin administration or any other cares as outlined in the student’s Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP).
  3. Comprehend and follow through with the student’s IHP, Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP), 504 Plan, IEP or other education plan as well as the student’s Emergency Care Plan (ECP).
  4. Attend and provide insight at the student’s school health team meetings.
  5. Recognize the signs and symptoms of adverse responses to the student’s condition or diagnosis in accordance with the student’s ECP.
  6. Train and practice standard precautions and infection control procedures at all student encounters.
  7. Participate in planned evaluation of care.
  8. Communicate frequently with school nurses, teachers, school staff, students, parents on medical plans, safety precautions, IHP’s, and ECP’s.
  9. Document and chart cares provided according to standards and requirements outline by school policy.
  10. Observe and record student health and behavior, noting any changes over time.
  11. Respectful of confidentiality and right to privacy.
  12. Be available on campus during regular school hours and when a student is participating in before and after school sponsored extracurricular activities, as determined by IHP, DMMP, 504 Plan, IEP, or other educational plan.
  13. Accompany the student on field trips or off campus school sponsored events and activities as determined by the IHP, DMMP, 504 Plan, IEP, or other educational plan.
  14. Other related duties as assigned and could be utilized in classrooms in a nonmedical paraprofessional role as needed.

 

Training requirements: The Paraprofessional is required to attend all in-service and pre-service training sessions as required including medication training and any specific training related to the student’s condition or diagnosis.   Must be CPR and First Aid Certified and maintain this certification.

 

Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk and stand. Lift sixty (60) lbs. occasionally, with the ability to reach, stand, walk, carry, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, and/or crawl. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely.  Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

 

Evaluation: Job performance will be evaluated by the School Nurse and the building principal.
