Job Summary
The Family and Youth Mentor works closely with both parents and children to foster high-quality, supportive, and enduring relationships. Referrals for this position are typically made through local social services and departments. In collaboration with the Head of Mentoring Services, caseworkers, the client’s caregiver, and the client; the Mentor helps identify and implement goals and objectives. Active participation in team meetings and regular documentation tracking client progress is a key part of this position.
Using a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach, the Mentor helps build trust and serves as a protective factor in the client’s life, enhancing resilience and promoting positive development. This is a part-time, non-exempt position, with work hours based on the needs of each case. Typically hours ranging from 20-25 hours per month per family.
Responsibilities/Duties:
- Provide empathetic, non-judgmental support to facilitate the successful achievement of client goals.
- Act as a positive role model and expose clients to positive experiences in the community.
- Teach life skills and remain open to learning from the client.
- Plan outings with input from the client, ensuring their voice is heard.
- Provide services in community-based settings that are appropriate for the clients.
Core Responsibilities:
- Achieve goals identified by the treatment team while adhering to approved timelines and funding source requirements.
- Complete mandatory reporting duties as a mandated reporter.
- Participate in monthly individual and group supervision sessions and quarterly ongoing training opportunities.
- Maintain professional timely case notes according to established guidelines.
- Build supportive, high-quality relationships with clients to help them engage positively with their community.
- Regularly assess clients’ needs and communicate any changes or new goals with the treatment team.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to stay calm, well-organized, and build strong relationships.
- Capable of objectively tracking behavior and communicating accurately in writing.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate well to both adults and children.
- Strong judgment and behavior management skills.
- Must comply with background check requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, special education, counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a human services or child welfare setting.
- Experience working with high-risk youth and/or families.
- CPR certification (or ability to obtain within the first 30 days).
Work Requirements:
- This is a remote position, but a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license are necessary.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Regular talking and hearing are required for daily duties.
- Ability to sit and use hands/fingers for tasks, including operating a keyboard.
- Occasional physical tasks may include standing, walking, lifting up to 30 pounds, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Close vision is necessary for certain tasks.
