The Machinist I sets up and operates a variety of manual and CNC machine tools to produce machined components.
Duties and responsibilities
- Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, shapers, or grinders. CNC and manual.
- Calculate dimensions or tolerances, using instruments such as micrometers or calipers.
- Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines.
- Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
- Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
- Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition.
- Organize machine programs.
- Responsible for managing tooling needs.
- Have all pieces verified by quality (in the event that quality is not available, use the "buddy system" to ensure quality of pieces).
- Ensure all parts are labeled and have job travelers with correct parts and record count for those parts.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.

- Production and Processing - Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
- Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry
- Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance
- Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings
Working conditions
- Sounds, Noise - Job requires frequent exposure to noises that may be distracting or uncomfortable.
- Indoors, Not Environmentally Controlled - Job requires working in a metal fabrication and warehouse environment without a cooling system.
- Wear Common Protective or Safety Equipment - Job requires constant use of the required personal protective equipment.
- Duration of Typical Work Week - As a full-time position the standard schedule is 40 hours/week. Production volumes will often require voluntary or mandatory weekday and/or weekend overtime.
