Job Description
Summary/Objective:
The Equipment Shop Manager oversees all of the Heavy-Duty Equipment Shop daily functions and manages the Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic’s, Administrative Assistant, and Shop Maintenance personnel. The primary duties include, but are not limited to, overseeing the mechanic’s completing and performing predictive and preventive repair, overhaul, and maintenance of automotive vehicles, construction-type, mobile, earth-moving, and load-lifting equipment, trailers, and various heavy-duty equipment, portable, and stationary engines.
Essential functions:
- Manage the equipment maintenance program for all fleet vehicles, and heavy-duty equipment.
- Manage all direct reports and ensure that all personnel adhere to established policies for inspection, maintenance, and repair of vehicles and equipment in addition to ensuring all company policies and procedures are followed. Hold all direct reports accountable for safety and performance requirements.
- Motivates and empowers others to achieve objectives and to develop a culture where employees feel ownership in what they do.
- Ensure shop areas are maintained in a clean and orderly condition, hazardous materials are stored, used and disposed of properly, and cares for tools and equipment.
- Coordinate with the Field Supervisors to visit all project sites to inspect all equipment located in the field once a week. Inspect all equipment for proper maintenance, and work with Field Supervisors on timing of repairs as needed.
- Work with Field Supervisors on scheduling usage and maintenance of vehicles and equipment around their schedule and production availability.
- Coordinate the pick up and drop off of equipment for repairs.
- Experience and knowledge of Federal DOT, Out-of-Service Criteria, including CHP BIT Inspections and DOT compliance audits.
- Review the daily DVIR’s for any reported fleet or equipment repairs.
- Oversee and supervise all internal shop operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot and oversee all completed repairs to assure quality control.
- Schedule and set priorities for maintenance and repair work on Company equipment.
- Make final inspections on equipment that was repaired and diagnose any outstanding defects.
- Generate work orders and evaluate repair work on its completion.
- Authorizes and approves procurement necessary parts, supplies, tools, and machinery. Develop cost estimates and determine which supplier can meet procurement needs. Oversee the parts inventory and follow up with ordering needed parts and equipment.
- Manages or negotiates contracts for services not performed in-house. Manage vendor relationships.
- Coordinate maintenance and repairs with other Company departments and divisions.
- Able to comply with all safety policies and procedures, DOT and OSHA regulations.
- Ability to purchase and sell equipment, write on-line sales advertisements for vehicle and equipment sales.
- Set up fleet inventory for a buy or sell rotation. Verify key equipment data (serial number, VIN, Hours and Miles, machine-level, and/or emission-related certifications).
- Selling Vehicles, Equipment, and Trailers. Be able to provide pricing quotations to prospective buyers. Obtain appraisals when necessary for valuations.
- Perform basic inspections of inventory items. Perform inspection reports by taking photographs of the equipment and overall condition. Update as needed.
- Knowledge of filling out vehicle and or equipment titles and paperwork associated with purchasing and selling vehicles or equipment.
- Execute appropriate sale and service documents in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain a networking contact list to be able to call previous buyers and sellers of Forestry, Heavy Equipment, vehicles, and trailers.
- Participate in networking opportunities through industry shows, auctions, and other sponsored events for the purpose of buying and selling vehicles, forestry and heavy duty equipment.
- Partner with Safety team to investigate all vehicle accidents and equipment accidents and fleet safety violations.
- Must have a strong work ethic.
- Be able to write weekly reports, and business correspondence.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of municipal equipment.
- Operating principles of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fueled engines.
- Operating principles of light and heavy-duty vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
- Electronic control systems are typically found on modern automotive equipment.
Ability to:
- Locate, correct, and adjust defects in light and heavy duty vehicular and mechanical equipment.
- Assist with the maintenance schedule and set priorities for repairs and preventive maintenance to be accomplished.
- Ability to effectively communicate mechanical issues and required repairs.
- Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Order and identify parts necessary for repairs.
- Operate engine and electrical diagnostic equipment, ARC and gas welders, soldering gun, air jacks, forklift, engine hoists, grinders, steam cleaner, high pressure washer, meters, gauges, hydraulic press, drill press, and a variety of power and hand tools to repair.
- Read and interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions.
- Competently and safely operate and care for tools used in vehicle and mechanical equipment repair work.

Supervisory responsibilities:
- Heavy Duty Machine Shop Mechanics, Administrative Assistant, and Shop Maintenance/Mechanic Trainee positions.
Work environment:
- All work is performed either inside a machine shop with open bay doors, to outside in all types of various weather (i.e. heat, cold, wind, sun and inclement weather, etc.)
- Exposure to all types of automotive solvents.
- Exposure to all elements of nature on a regular basis.
- Exposure to loud noise.
- Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dust, etc.
Physical demands: The physical demands below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Occasionally sits; frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- Able to push and pull with hands, arms, and feet repetitively.
- Must have good visual and auditory physical capabilities in order to manage sight and sounds in a hazardous machine shop environment.
- Able to push, pull, climb, sit and stretch regularly while performing the essential functions of the job.
- Able to be alert and cognitive of multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including awareness of other employees, subcontractors, machinery, equipment, and moving traffic when applicable.
- Ability to work around loud noises.
- Coordination between hands, eyes, feet to guide equipment and objects is required.
- Must be able to mount and dismount safely off vehicles and equipment.
- Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Must be able to work overtime as requested.

- Able to lift up to 60 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Required education and experience:
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): or Work Equivalent in a vocational Diesel or Automotive program.
- At least 2 years supervisory experience.
- Must be mechanically inclined.
Preferred education and experience:
- A job for which military experienced candidates are encouraged to apply.
- Heavy equipment Mechanic Experience: 5 plus years
- Fleet Mechanic Experience: 5 plus years
Additional eligibility requirements:
- Must have a valid driver’s license. A Commercial Driver’s License is a plus.
- Clean Driving Record: 5 years (Required).
- Must be able to provide Motor Vehicle Record at time of job offer.
- Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
