General Summary
The Optical Network Engineer is primarily responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining optical network systems that support high-speed data transmission. They are responsible for troubleshooting and implementing solutions on the Rise optical network and network systems. Optical Network Engineer work with all operations teams including capacity management, Field, and NOC teams for issue escalations, optimal pathing over existing fiber transports and peering to maximizing performance, reliability, and redundancy.
This role requires a solid understanding of Optical Networking, DWDM, and ROADM systems, including architectural design, as well as the implementation and operation of core network upgrades and improvements. While optical networking will be the primary function IP / routing job functions will be required.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities
- Designing Optical Networks : Develop designs for fiber optic networks, including point-to-point and multi-point networks, ensuring they meet capacity, scalability, and performance requirements.
- Network Topology Design : Create and maintain network topologies using optical switching systems, DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing), and SDN (Software Defined Networking).
- Deploying Optical Network Equipment : Oversee the installation and configuration of optical devices, including optical amplifiers, routers, transponders, and multiplexers.
- Maintenance and Support : Use network monitoring tools to ensure the optical network is operating efficiently and reliably. Troubleshooting and technical support to other teams or customers regarding optical network-related issues.
- Documenting Network Configurations : Maintain up-to-date records of network designs, configurations, and changes to ensure consistency and compliance.
- Training and Knowledge Transfer : Provide guidance and training to less experienced engineers or technicians in optical network technologies and best practices. Participate in training programs, conferences, and certifications to stay updated on the latest optical networking trends.
- Participates in an on-call rotation with colleagues.
- Works with third party vendors.
- Works on regularly scheduled days as well as unscheduled days and / or beyond regular work hours due to customer or operational demands, as needed.
- Adheres to all Company standard procedures, policies, and safety practices in the course of performing work activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
