POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for operating the shore and ship’s gear crane for the loading and unloading of cargo. Must operate large capacity shore crane for the loading and unloading of cargo from vessels, trucks and railcars. The position is also responsible for operating the ship’s gear crane equipment for the loading and discharge of cargo and containers to/from the vessels. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Must have a minimum (2) two years of industry related experience operating large shore cranes or a combination of ships’ and large shore cranes.
- Must have the ability to read, write, and speak intermediate English.
- Must have been certified to operate a Shore Crane within the past three (3) years.
- Must have advanced knowledge understanding flagging signal used in cargo handling.
- Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, team oriented environment
- Must have the ability to work with limited supervision and strong initiative
- Must be able to work (flexible hours) extended hours needed to include nights, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Must have the ability to think logically and follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions.
- Must have the ability to exercise independent judgment within established systems and procedures.
- Organization and time management skills.
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary
- Operate large capacity mobile harbor/shore crane and or a Ship’s Gear Crane within a high-volume production area loading, unloading cargo, containers and discharging of cargo vessels, in a safe and efficient manner without the risk of damaging the crane, equipment, cargo, vessel, wharf, and colleagues.
- Loading and discharge heavy lift cargo from trucks and railcars.
- Conduct and follow crane hand signals with flagman when performing the loading and discharge of cargo and containers
- Inspect all equipment before use to ensure is safe to operate
- Report any gear found to be unsafe to the Walking Foreman
- Maintain communication with personnel throughout operation in accordance with cargo handling procedures
- Inform supervisor immediately if detect any damages and/or spoiled cargo before loading or unloading
- Performs all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines
- Follow and comply with company, federal and state regulations such as DOT (Department of Transportation)
Secondary
- Perform general maintenance/lube on cranes as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Select and safely use appropriate equipment which may include various types of forklifts.
- Perform visual inspection on all stevedoring gear and repair/replace as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Subject to physical and/or DOT Screening is required along with other tests as applicable
- The employee must be able to work in high altitudes
- The employee is continuously required to sit (while driving), and stand when prepping for operation and maintenance.
- The employee is frequently required to twist reach forward, and grasp,
- The employee is frequently required to exercise repetitive wrist motion, eye-hand coordination, eye-hand-foot coordination and finger dexterity.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use their fingers.
- The employee is frequently required to talk and/or hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to walk, climb, pinch, bend-forward, squat, reach overhead, pinch and exercise repetitive foot motion.
- The employee is frequently required to lift, carry, up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds
- The employee frequently push and pull up to 10lbs and will occasionally pull and pull up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direct supervision from the Walking Foremen - Crane Operations and Superintendents. Does not exercise supervision over any position.
CONDITIONS:
- Outdoors, exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts
- The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
- The employee is continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
- Moderate vibration with use of hydraulic seating system
