POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for verifying, comparing, and matching the service order and seal numbers with containers and cargo according to stow plan before loading or discharging from vessel. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required. QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Must have a minimum of one (1) year experience in the ocean transportation industry, as shipping and receiving clerk inspecting the handling, storage, and stowing of cargoes, including direct discharge and yard load-out of steel and aluminum cargoes.
- Must have the ability to read, write, and speak basic English
- Must have High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information
- Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team oriented work environment
- Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
- Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions
- Must be able to work (flexible hours) extended hours including nights, overtime, weekends and holidays
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary
- Perform all functions in accordance with operating and safety guidelines
- Record stow locations of cargo and containers and translate into stow plans
- Follow stow plan, created by Port Captain, when loading and discharging cargo and containers from vessel
- Record, track, and verify cargo and container information, utilizing hand-held computer
- Perform direct discharge and yard load-out of steel and aluminum cargoes, including filling out dock receipts and maintaining a running tally of discharged and shipped cargoes.
- Coordinate with Foreman and Clerk-in-Charge (CIC) of the placement of containers and cargo on the vessel
- Notify Clerk-in-Charge (CIC) of discrepancies and/or damages of cargo or containers
- Coordinate and supervise Checker activities including, but not limited to, empty container inspection and tagging, loaded container seal inspections, checking of break bulk and general cargoes to confirm port / weight / status (RLS/HLD), etc. when assigned to each vessel
- Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people, equipment, etc.) at all times
Secondary
- Keep tally on bagged cargo vessels
- Assist south yard clerks in receiving cargo
- Perform other related tasks as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Subject to physical screening is required along with other tests as applicable
- Must be able to work at heights
- The employee is occasionally required to sit
- The employee is frequently required to reach forward, exercise repetitive foot and wrist motion and finger dexterity
- While performing the duties the employee is regularly required to use their fingers
- The employee is frequently required to talk and hear
- The employee is continuously required to stand, walk, climb, bend forward, squat, twist, pinch and reach overhead
- The employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, push and pull up to 20 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direct supervision from the Port Captain and Clerk in Charge (CIC) and does not exercise supervision over any other position.
CONDITIONS:
- Outdoors, exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts
- The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
- The employee is continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
