Position: Technician Apprentice

Position Summary:

Responsible for performing complete preventative maintenance on trucks and motor homes, and other equipment/vehicles as directed. This is an apprentice level position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Comply with all company policies, local work, and safety rules
  • Perform essential tasks to complete Preventative Maintenance on trucks and motor homes. Change oil, fuel, air, and power steering filters. Drain and refill oils on engines, transmissions, and differentials with proper viscosity oils and to specification. Grease all components that are required. Dispose of waste oils and antifreeze in accordance with EPA regulations. Perform 30-point inspections on all vehicles. Power washing units to clean any residual oils, coolant, or fuels.
  • Perform the required training coursework and/or computer-based training which is pre-designed to move trainees through to obtaining systems certification, to include:
    • Diesel Engine Repair, Drive Systems, Fuel & Electrical Systems, Steering & Brake Systems, Chassis & Springs, Cooling & Lubrication Systems, Hydraulics and Welding, Computer Diagnostics & Software, and Safety & Business Communications.
  • Participate in all training programs; maintain and update safety skills and knowledge; keep current with hazardous material training requirements.
  • Communicate clearly with program mentors and perform duties in a manner that promotes superior customer service and professionalism within the company and the industry.

SPECIAL SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Prior Diesel Technician or mechanical experience is but preferred
  • Must have the ability to use tools and equipment of the trade and preventative maintenance inspection methods.
  • Must be willing to invest in core mechanic tools, to perform your job functions.
  • Must be able to learn to inspect and analyze defects in equipment and use a variety of computers and tools with skill. Must be able to document and enter computer work records.
  • Must have the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, read orders and work instructions, and make accurate entries in the daily log.
  • Must be able to follow posted safety rules and safe operating procedures to ensure proper techniques, such as lifting, are performed in the manner as which is described.
  • Ability and willingness to work all scheduled hours, including overtime.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and maintain balance for extensive periods of time.
  • Ability to frequently lift to 50 lbs. from 0” to 36” and carry objects up to 50 feet. Occasionally lift to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl frequently to work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to frequently twist, push, and pull from a variety of positions to work on equipment. Ability to frequently grip and grasp mechanic tools and parts. Manipulative skills and dexterity to operate equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to frequently climb to get in vehicles, on a step ladder to reach the engine compartment and stairs. The ability to climb and work up to 15” above ground may be required.
  • Ability to reach frequently overhead as well as horizontally while laying on back.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental working conditions vary, and this position may encounter vibration, noise, odors, and extremes in temperature and wind as well as exposure to varied weather, varied surfaces, sharp edges, varied lighting and confined and congested areas, and occasional exposure to petroleum-based products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, and grease, detergent cleaning solutions, dust, fumes, and chemicals.
