SUMMARY

Performs groundskeeper duties to assist in the overall landscaping plan of the Wickwire House and occasionally other college locations.    Responsible for the care of trees, shrubs, plants, lawns, landscaping beds and parking lot and driveway maintenance. Must have exceptional attention to detail and take pride in a job well done at a highly visible facility. 

Provide snow related removal with appropriate equipment.  Assist in the preventative maintenance for critical assets in the facilities area, as needed.


HOURS: MONDAY - FRIDAY 10am-3:30pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES included the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  1. Under limited supervison, use necessary equipment to maintain trees, shrubs and plants, as related to the home’s overall landscaping plan.
  2. Operate sweepers in cleaning drives, walks and parking lot.
  3. Maintain grounds equipment and related equipment.
  4. Remove snow and ice from driveways, parking lots, sidewalks and other campus areas if assigned
    • Respond to work with a timely, professional, respectful, and proactive approach.  
  1. Schedule watering of lawns and plants.
  2. Pick up debris from site.
  3. Other duties as assigned by administrative supervisor including assisting other facilities staff during peak times.
  4. Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and be evaluated by same.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:

Internal:Daily contact with department personnel.  Regular contact with staff from other departments in service provider capacity.   


External: Contact with College President and family, Board Members, Donors, College leaders and others in service provider capacity.

Education and Experience

Required:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. and two years of related experience using similar equipment. 
  • Valid Michigan Drivers license with no restrictions. 
  • Basic knowledge of operating landscaping equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a neat and professional appearance of grounds.
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication skills and professional demeanor.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in landscaping, gardening, or grounds maintenance

Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to troubleshoot and execute solutions from start to finish.   Ability to present a positive image of the college and the Facilities Department in relationship with others and in one’s personal habits. Cooperative personality to be able to function with team members. Neatness in one’s personal habits and dress in accordance with tasks. Capable of using the computerized Summit Tracer Trane control system. The position may require flexible work hours.


Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blueprints, specifications, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

WORK ENVIROMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
