INVESTIGATOR DUI/ SERIOUS TRAFFIC

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform professional investigative work to assist in investigating DUI cases and vehicular homicide cases for the Solicitor’s Office. Gathers and compiles necessary information for the Assistant Solicitor including incident reports, accident reports, certified prior convictions, criminal histories, crime lab information, defendant, victim and witness statements, victim impact statements, and medical records. Communicates with various groups and agencies including law enforcement, victims, witnesses, judges, court personnel, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Obtains case file for follow-up investigation; prepares case with activity log.

Reviews various legal documents, law enforcement reports, and records such as court files, arrest bookings/charges, police incident and investigation reports, warrants, property and evidence reports, criminal history, medical reports, crime lab reports, and other pertinent information.

Obtains and analyzes facts and evidence, reviews criminal histories, interprets criminal, traffic, and municipal codes as they apply to cases; presents findings to prosecuting attorneys and/or Solicitor.

Compiles summary of investigations performed including narratives of witness testimony, evidence obtained, and recommendations pertaining to case disposition; completes daily reports and logs reflecting activities performed.

Prioritizes cases and subpoenas for processing; obtains subpoenas for documents and witnesses required for trial. Works with other law enforcement agencies during investigations; locating & subpoenaing victims/witnesses, completing cases as appropriate.

Assembles all evidence to be presented in court and verifies each item of evidence has been marked correctly and entered into record.

Assists during court proceedings to ensure orderly preparation and presentation of case; provides testimony and serves as expert witness in court.

Prepares correspondence, letters, memoranda, reports, and other documents associated with daily routine and duties of the position.

Consults with governmental agencies, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys on a daily basis to obtain and provide information and guidance.

Performs flexible administrative duties including preparing subpoena lists, obtaining police reports, criminal backgrounds, and driving histories, and filing cases, witness lists, and court orders.

Assists with jury research reports and selecting jurors.

Responds to inquiries and requests for information by telephone or in person regarding assigned cases.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requires a high school diploma or GED with vocational or technical school training in Criminal Justice or related field and a minimum of 3 years of experience in law enforcement work with knowledge of legal procedures, investigative tactics, and ability to perform analytical thinking; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must be a P.O.S.T certified Georgia Peace Officer and SFST certified. Knowledge and training with regard to accident reconstruction is recommended. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and related certifications as directed by the Solicitor.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Tasks may require exposure to such environmental conditions as violence.
