JOB TITLE: Emergency Room Registration Clerk

JOB SUMMARY: The Emergency Room Registration Clerk is responsible for the accurate and efficient processing of patient information in the Emergency Department. This role involves collecting and verifying patient demographics, insurance details, and medical history to ensure timely and effective treatment. The ER Registration Clerk acts as the first point of contact for patients and visitors, providing them with assistance, directions, and information in a calm and professional manner during stressful situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Registration:
1. Greet patients and visitors in a friendly and professional manner.
2. Collect and verify patient demographic information, including personal details, insurance information, and medical history.
3. Input patient information into the hospital’s electronic health record (EHR) system or other designated software.
4. Obtain necessary consent forms and ensure the patient’s information is up-to-date.
Insurance Verification:
1. Verify and update insurance information, including contacting insurance companies when necessary.
2. Communicate with patients regarding co-pays, deductibles, and insurance coverage.
3. Ensure proper billing codes are entered for accurate insurance claims.
Patient Communication:
1. Answer questions and provide basic information about the hospital’s emergency department policies and procedures.
2. Direct patients and visitors to the appropriate areas within the facility.
3. Assist with any language barriers or special needs, ensuring all patients are properly informed.
Data Entry and Documentation:
1. Accurately enter and maintain patient information in the hospital’s EHR system.
2. Process admission, discharge, and transfer paperwork when required.
3. Ensure all documents are properly scanned and uploaded to the system.
Support Emergency Room Operations:
1. Assist medical staff in the flow of patients into the emergency room by ensuring proper documentation is completed quickly and accurately.
2. Help maintain a calm and organized environment, especially during busy or high-stress times.
Confidentiality and Compliance:
1. Adhere to HIPAA regulations and maintain the confidentiality of patient information at all times.
2. Ensure compliance with hospital policies and industry regulations regarding patient information and records.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Previous experience in healthcare or customer service (preferred).
- Familiarity with medical terminology and insurance processes (preferred).
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer software (EHR systems, Microsoft Office, etc.).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in high-pressure situations.
- Ability to maintain a professional and calm demeanor, especially during stressful or emergency situations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift or move items up to a certain weight (if applicable).
- May require occasional evening, weekend, or holiday shifts, depending on the hospital's operating hours.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:
A. Provide services to patients while fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere that enhances patient relations.
B. Maintain a professional and courteous customer service approach when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff members.

D. Adhere to aseptic techniques during procedures and exercise proper precautions when in direct contact with patients or handling potentially infectious materials.
E. Monitor areas for potential quality improvements and actively contribute to the Hospital District’s Quality Improvement Plan.
F. Follow all safety and infection control policies and procedures in accordance with JCHD guidelines.
G. Ensure compliance with relevant Medicare standards.
